Ford Ranger needs things "wiggled" to start.
Last year my spouse bought me a 2000 Ranger. Right off the bat she had a misfire. We replaced:
The coil pack,
Plugs,
Wires,
Muffler.
We tried hooking it to a code reader and the code reader doesn't read. We replaced the computer with no change.
Since all this started, sometimes she doesn't want to start at all unless I wiggled the wire coming off the temp control sensor. The problem seems to be snowballing. Now we need to wiggle the temp control sensor wire and the computer grounding wire to start her up almost daily.
Please help before this disgruntled truck decides not to start at all.

You are in a high corrosion area (Northern Ohio) and it looks like that is what you are fighting...
The temperature sensor tells the ECM/ECU what temperature to set the proper air/fuel mixture...
Without that the truck will not start....
The engine grounds (and for that fact ALL grounds need to be removed and the contact areas need to be cleaned to bare metal, silicon grease needs to be applied , and then they need to be re-assembled... Check the wiring harness coming from the ECM/ECU computer and address those grounds also...
Take a close look at the frame of this truck and the rear spring shackles (where they mount to the frame rails... ) ... I just replaced the radiator shroud (frame) on the 97 I recently bought...It was basically in pieces and no longer attached to the front frame rails... I'm lucky.... the frame and cab have only minor surface rust that I'm working on...
The salt used on the roads in winter really does a job on these trucks here...

That's just a heads up, probably not your problem but............
I would solve the OBD2 not connecting first, reading computer codes.
There is a fuse for that, usually it is the same fuse for the cigarette lighter/AUX power port.
First question is what do you mean by "no start"?
When you turn the key to START nothing happens, no click and no starter motor, there are switches that prevent starter motor working, manual trans clutch switch, automatic trans neutral switch
OR
Start motor turns the engine but it doesn't fire up
2000 V6 Ranger will have PATS(passive anti-theft system), there should be an anti-theft light on the dash, when you turn on the key the PATS reads a tag in the key that has a unique number(no batteries needed) that number is compared to numbers in the computers memory(3 or 4 numbers programmed in at the factory for this vehicle).
If PATS number matches then anti-theft light will go off, if it doesn't match then anti-theft light will flash rapidly.
Rapid flashing means fuel system will be shut off, no fuel pump and no fuel injectors, so no start.
Does your anti-theft light work?
And does the CEL(check engine light) work?
It should also come on when key is turned on.
Disconnected or loose temp sensor wouldn't cause a no start
Only two sensors can cause a no start:
CKP sensor behind crank pulley on the lower front of the engine, if those wires are loose broken then that could cause a no start.
TPS(throttle position sensor) on front upper intake, if this sensor shorts and sends computer 5 volts at start up the computer will shut off fuel injectors.
Both of these sensor's wiring is near the temp sensor wiring, in the same harness.
If you can get the OBD2 working, the codes may tell you what wiring is acting up, if that is indeed the problem.
Computer has multiple Ground wires, one loose one can effect one system in the computer though.
2000 Rangers had the computer connector on upper firewall near the center, and it could get water in it at that location causing problems, water leaks down thru hood gasket, they added a second cover to it for better protection.
Best to disconnect battery and remove that connector, inspect it for corrosion, refill with dielectric grease and reattach.
That's just a heads up, probably not your problem but............

Funny you should mention the cigarette lighter, it doesn't work either.
That's why we tried a new computer to no avail.
My spouse also spotted a red wire not connected to anything. We were wondering if that's wire that connects to the code reader and such.
By no start, I mean the engine tries to turn but doesn't fire up.

You can download the 2000 Ranger manual here:https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
Page 141/142 is the Cab fuse panel
Looks like fuse #17 25amp would be the one to check
Do the dash lights work?
CEL and anti-theft lights
No, there is no red wire used for the data link plug, OBD2 plugin
