I have never torn apart an engine to this extent, so I am unfamiliar about what I should be looking for. I can only assume that the lighter colored piston is the one that was the cylinder that was causing my problems. Also on that cylinder, the head in that area appears to be cracked.


Is this the area where the head usually cracks? Right inbetween the valves? I am not sure, but it looks like a small hairline crack. The headgasket itself does not appear to be damaged, but I could be wrong.

 

dang man! I did the same exact thing this past weekend! replaced both head gaskets. the only problem I ran into was I broke 4 of the header studs! I gotta try and get them out of there and new ones in this coming weekend. btw same color truck too!!

 

Man I need to do this...bein my passenger side head gasket is leakin...im afraid this is too much for me though...I hope you can get it figured out!

 

In between the valves is the most common place for the cracked heads to my knowledge. I did my head gaskets a couple months ago (on a 302). Before you reinstall the heads you should definately have them looked at.

 

I will definately get them looked at. I now feel like maybe my headgasket was fine and the only problem was the cracked head. The headgasket that I took off looked great, although it still could be part of the problem. I want to get the valves checked out too to make sure they seal well.

 

You may also want to have them resurfaced. This way you get a true flat mating surface when reinstalling the heads.
