I was wondering if any of you have ever used a 0w-30 motor oil in your truck. According to Mobil's web site this oil is appropriate where ever a 5w-30, or 10w-30 is called for - it also meets Ford's WSS-M2C929-A spec, so it would meet warranty requirements. It also claims that this oil can provide better fuel economy - something all of us 4.0 guys crave! This information is taken directly from Mobil's web site...

i havnt but i need to change my oil soon again so ill give it a shot...

 

I've been using Amsoil's 0W30 synthetic in my Ranger for some time now. It's a 3.0 though.

 

I couldn't help thinking that it might help those of us with the "timing chain rattle", by allow the tensioners to be lubed quicker.

 

I just switched to Amsoil 0W30 in my 4.0. Man did it ever quiet the truck down. I didn't think it was noisy before, but it just purrs now and seems to run much smoother. I haven't driven far enough to know on the mileage yet, but every other vehicle that I switched to Amsoil, I gained 1-2 mpg.

 

I tried running a 5w-20 with no fuel mileage gains that were noticable, even after two changes of it, my average fuel mileage didn't change. 0w30 would be great for cold starts, but once you get the engine to temp, you'll be back to where you started with your 5w30

That oil is too thin for the 4.0, it is still one of the few engines that Ford still specs a 30 weight for.

 

i am running that oil in my girls 3.0 dohc Ford fusion it works great that car is quiet except for the two flowmasters on it.

 

Oil weights are measured by a piston pushing oil though a oriface. They count the amount of strokes vs volume flowed it takes to determine a oil "weight" at a given temp. And most importantly there is a *numerical range of stokes* in which the oil must fall into to be classified.

Long story short.. the higher the difference between the cold flow number and the hot flow number (0W-30 in this post) the thinner the oil will be.. but yet the more additives it'll have to help gain back the hot run qualities.

It's true that it will improve mileage. But you'll have more piston noise and more likely more timing chain noise. Also, as you put mileage on the oil the additives become less effective.

I personally run a 10w-30 mobil 1 in all my cars. Yes I'm giving up a small percentage on MPG. But the motor is quiet and even in michigan winter temps I have no cold start problems. I'm also able to leave the oil in there a little longer and don't really worry about the additives.

Now if I were just leasing a car.. I'd use the cheapest stuff I could find.
