governed or something else?

did an engine swap after overheating the engine with only 78k miles on it. it had a governed speed of 100mph. swapped that engine for exact engine (4.0 6cyl ohv) but it was a 98 and mine was 99. now here is the problem i am having, at exactly 2900 rpm's i get major cut out like it has a governor on the rpms versus my speed. it will do this in all but 1st gear and i can rev it past the cutting out but like when i am in 5th and i let the rpms come back down below 3000 to slow down the cutting out kicks in again until it goes below the 2900 rpm thing. is this normal or what the **** is going on.

Did you swap over computers and everything?

TrePaul86 Apr 2, 2009 12:09 AM

Did you grab the PCM from that vehicle you pulled the motor from? Sounds like what I'm going through.

jaksback Apr 2, 2009 12:13 AM

no need or so i thought cuz i bought the engine used and it was virtually the exact same engine 98, 99, and 00 have same engine for the 4.0 ohv. the engine was already pulled so no pcm or anything else

The computer is different. You need that computer and take it to ford and tell them what you did. Drive it with your computer in it, go to the dealership and swap to the other computer and go in and tell them what you're doing, what you've done and what problems you're having right now.

That's what I had to do. I know PATS wasn't introduced until 2001, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the computer and knowing they're not the same motors.

Sounds like the computer thinks you are in park or neutral.

TrePaul86 Apr 2, 2009 12:16 AM

That rev limiter didn't come until 2001 Christian. I know that for a fact. That's what I'm dealing with. I had to trick my manual into telling my auto computer that it's in neutral (til next weekend when it's fixed) so I too have the 3k RPM rev limiter.

jaksback Apr 2, 2009 12:19 AM

both engines are/were manual trannies though

chainfire Apr 2, 2009 12:27 AM

Each engine is like a person. They are all a little different, and each engine will come with its on serial code. There is a possibility that the computer is not reading properly, and is inducing the rev limiter as a sort of fail safe.

Disclaimer: I am probably way out to left field on this one, but I am trying lol.

Hmm.... Try taking it to the stealership... It'll be a flat fee off the bat of $90 but they will be able to tell you what's going on, what's not working with the rest of the truck, what you need to do, what codes you're throwing if you're throwing any at all, etc...

That's my best guess so far. Go from there.

Oh dang! I didn't know that Grant! Thanks for the heads up!

jaksback Apr 2, 2009 01:12 AM

noy all were pats though cuz the engine that i took out wasn't governed by rpm just by speed.....so no other suggestions?
