Engine mod checklist
I better post what I got eh? 1999 Ranger XLT, 4.0l v6 OHV, 5-speed manual.
Here in a few weeks/months I plan on doing some mods to my truck, so I want to make a list and ask for some opinions with what I should do. I'm not sure what my budget is yet, so just keep it within a general range of not being overkill lol.
So far I want to put on some headers and a dual exhaust system piped out before my rear tires. The only brand I've really seen for headers would be JBA, and they have stainless steel or ceramic coated; what's the difference?
I've looked around and heard somethings about power pulleys? What would they do to improve engine power, etc. What are some brands that could help?
And some air induction eh? I was looking at a Volant (sp?) cold-air intake. Would a cold air intake even be worth it? I'm not saying a supercharger or turbo is out of the question; it's just very expensive and I'm not sure how much money I'm going to have soon lol.
What are some things that I could do to my engine to enhance performance? This is just a little list of things I have my mind wrapped around that I'd like to check out. I betI

What's the difference between the stainless steel or ceramic coating? Is there really a difference? I have a link to the JBA headers, but for the rest I'm a bit lost. I'll have to ask my dad for some advice since he put headers on his old '67 mustange and ran duals. He's the one who gave me advice to side-pipe them before the rear tires, which would be neat :D

Stainless steel is for show. Get the ceramic coating since it will hold the heat in the header.

Now pully's (Copied from JusnesModified.com): Underdrive pulley systems increase engine horsepower by reducing the amount of power required to drive external engine accessories. For example, the alternator, power steering, water pump and air compressor rob horsepower from the engine. By replacing factory-sized crank and accessory drive pulleys with a resized pulley, the accessories are slowed, resulting in more horsepower available to the drive wheels.
If you don't like the idea of your generator going slower you can install an overdrive pully to put it back to as if it were stock.
One mod that really is nice is a tuner/programmer. It reprograms/edits factory settings in your computer. Tied with a CAI, a pully, headers, exhaust. Your going to nice some power and some a MPG increase. It also lets you set your odometer for larger/smaller tire sizes and a new final drive ratio.
It you want dual exhaust your going to need a single in/dual out muffler. I'm not going to get into the great muffler debate, but I will say suse the search feature and look for videos of people's exhaust systems.

Wow thanks guys lol. I've got a lot to think about and go pricewatching/shopping for.
As for most of this stuff, I'll probably take it to a shop. My dad said he would be more than willing to help for headers/exhaust, but only if it was 30 years ago when there was nothing else in the way of the block haha. Any tips I you could give me when I take it to the shop to make sure I don't get ripped off or anything?

Do you have any links or suggestions for a pully and tuner? I've got to make up a list lol.

ASP makes the underdrive pully. It isn't cheap for a 4.0 because it has the balancer built in. As for the tuner, I'd search for results. There has been threads in the past on who has the best one, and who's tune are the best.
Before you get a tuner i'd at least get a CAI and a cat back exhaust. Because they can tune for them.

Stuff For Your Ranger
This is an excellent website. I can't remember his name, but he is a member here and on RPS. He is quick, reliable, and easy to talk to when you have problems.

Yeah I remember finding sfyr a few days back! I'll figure some stuff out when I get home to talk to my folks, and I'll see what I'm in line to do :D
For the pulleys there are two systems: a 4-piece and a 5-piece. What's the difference? Or should I just look at at the underdrive crank pulley?

Check out www.autoanything.com Really good site from what ive heard/seen. Give it a look, all you do is type the year make and model of the vehicle and it gives every thing that can be put on/in your truck. Oh and for exhaust definitely go with magnaflow. Best sound for a v6 ranger ive heard yet, and its a straight through design so better performance.
