brakes wearing out prematurely

if the drums arent properly adjusted, the fronts are doing more work
if the pads are cheap they will wear fast
if you are hard on the brakes, if you stop too soon, if you drive with both feet, or if you drive like a woman, then 20k could be normal for you.
look at the brakes and see if both pads (inboard and outboard) are worn evenly. if they are not, you could have a faulty caliper or frozen guide pins.
i use wagner thermo-quiet pads, and i have 46k on my front pads and they are a little less than 50%
