Project Thread - Rebuilding 4.0L OHV
Well my truck has developed a very bad miss-fire, I already know my head is cracked and I have been limping it along. its a common problem on the OHV engine's. I finally decided to go all out and rebuild the top half of the engine. The engine is finished and back in running order I can NOT believe how quiet the engine is now.
Parts list
Powder coated GT40 valve cover blue
HERE you can see what happens to the push rods the end wears out causing gaps in the valve train you can see a good one and bad one
There is NO ridge on the cylinder wall, also you can still see crosshatching. The ridge you can see was carbon, after cleaning it was smooth.
Now can you spot the bad cylinder? *hint* look for the discolored exhaust valve.
Now new hydraulic roller lifters over night in oil.
Parts list
- JBA headers
- Percy split-lock header bolts
- NEW Alabama Cylinder heads
- Delta Cams new rockers and rails and push rods
- Felpro gaskets
- Felpro head bolts
- new valve covers
- water pump
- t-stat
- belt
- spark plugs
- Sealed power roller lifters
- Ill edit when i remember other stuff

lets see Monday after work at 6pm I went outside and organized some tools, I just moved all my tool boxes and stuff over that weekend to my house. Installed my new 60gal upright air compressor that night. I removed my hood, intake hose and air filter, and went to bed. I stated taking it apart about 3pm on Tuesday, and finished that night at about 11pm and I could see the pistons. I worked alone on Tuesday so I was just taking my time.
Started today (Wednesday), at about 11am and finished about 10pm. I had Grant over today helping, it was nice to have another hand when installing the heads and things of that sort. Also exclude about 2-3 hours for lunch and parts running around.
so total work time I would say about 15-16 hours, I didn't rush at it and was being step by step so I didn't forget to torque anything down.

After driving it throttle response is a big improvement the engine spools up the rpm's much easier now. Being I did not port the heads or install a cam, honestly I would say its just a tad of a HP improvement. What is amazing me is how quiet the valve train is now no more push-rod and rocker clatter. Also my misfire is gone at idle and it was also so bad you couldn't drive the truck anymore. Any force on the motor and it would misfire, it was a dead dog.

Given that you had it apart and put in new lifters you should have put in a cam, that is what I regret. I think it would be cool to build up an OHV for low end torque with a 4.3L stroker kit, ported heads, matched injectors, comp cams 410, underdrive pullies, e-fan, JBA headers, low stall torque converter, 66mm throttle body, high compression forged pistons and rods. I would totally do that if I knew my rusty frame would last.
How many miles does that engine have?

I just checked the thread I know why I am not going, its on the weekend of my sisters Grad party from HS, she would murder me if I didnt go.
first weekend of June I have to be in I think its Yorkville Illinois for a family thing. This year is busy as heck for my family.
Its even up in the air if I am going to TN this year.

this helped alot. this winter my investment is going to come through and im getting a motorcycle to get back and forth to work and im sadly parking the ranger to begin the much needed rebuild. this will be my first big wrenching job on the actual engine (i know the suspension and cooling system front and back) so im a bit nervous. and the fact that its not a ranger motor but an explorer 4.0 its harder to get proper parts as easy as i would with just saying i need 2001 xlt parts.
ill be doing this alone none of the crew has another ranger to bounce ideas off of but ive had this baby 10 years and im not about to see it die. loving this forum more and more!
