I am gutted... again.

After my ordeal with water gushing into the engine after cylinder head and cam dive rebuild ( see here https://www.ranger-forums.com/4-0l-o...gutted-173909/ ), I pulled the engine apart and did a rudimentary smoke test. With the heads and oil pans removed I vented smoke into the water pump holes and was able to see the smoke coming out in the crankshaft area. OK, a hole somewhere, I thought. I bought a "new" engine, ie it needed cam drive rebuild etc. So I did all that, over the last few months (I am doing this with the car outside and we had a terrible summer, I am in Brisbane). I used the "new" engine block and internals as well as the previously rebuilt and machined heads, all new gaskets etc. Today I finished everything. This time I thought I put the coolant in first, then check if there is water in the sump and then fill it up with oil. Needless to say THAT THE WATER AGAIN IS IN THE SUMP!!! I am so pissed/disappointed/you name it.

I am at a total loss here. I will post some pictures, maybe I did something wrong when I removed the LPG bits...

Cheers, Thomas

New engine with the same problem? You're reusing a defective part or the new block has damage too. Or you're doing something wrong repeatedly.
Did you get a good look at it? By that I mean have you taken the oil pan off? Did my ice water suggestion make any sense?
Is someone pouring water into the oil fill while you're not looking?

I had to reuse a few parts, the biggest ones being the heads. The block, which I thought was the culprit I did not reuse. I am thinking I am doing something wrong repeatedly. I will do a pressure test of the cooling system and see if I can pinpoint the leak.

Certain bolts on items like timing covers and other accessories may go into either an oil passage, or a coolant passage. This could be an easy way for coolant to enter your oil that you are overlooking. Do some research on your engine and replacing the accessories to determine whether or not these bolts exist on your setup.

FOUND THE PROBLEM! If you have a coolant leak you cannot locate check the 2 welch plugs in each cylinder head. You can find them when you remove the cam covers. Aaaaarrgh!
