i got an SCT tuner for my birthday

my rent's bought me a tuner. i have a couple questions and i'm not sure how to set it up. i was also hoping to get some advice.

first. i was told it's for a 4.0L stang. that will work for our trucks. this is true right?
i was also told it has 3 canned tunes for different octanes. i'm guessing two 87s and a 91/93 from what i've read other members receiving in theirs.

second, i'm not sure which one i have. when i went to the SCT site, i typed my serial number in, there are no updates and it lists is 9 choices. they are all SF3's.

third, is it as easy as just putting the disc into my laptop and installing the program then installing it into my truck?

fourth. i am glad i didn't buy that one that was on here or i'd have been screwed w/ 2 tuners.

Mustangs had 4.0s? If it says SF3 on it its an SF3, X3 its an X3. Make sure its "unmarried" or "unlocked" if its not, you'll have to send it to SCT and get it unlocked which is 120 i think. You'll need to get tunes for it, i very highly doubt your PCM code is the same as the previous owners so it won't work without custom tunes which are 100 bucks from rogue
Although SF3's come preloaded with tunes, it doesnt have any for a ranger.

it doesn't say what model it is but that is what comes up when i type in the serial number. next to the serial number is a model number and it is a 3015.
yea mustangs came with a 4.0L from like 05 or 06+. then they put the 300hp v6 in them.

i'm pretty sure this was new. my stepdad wouldn't buy something like this used. so wouldn't it come unlocked from the factory?

if its new then yeah it should be unlocked already. pre-canned tunes wont work if its an SF3 because none are for a ranger unfortunately. play around with the menu and just make sure its unlocked/unmarried

Take a picture of the front of it, Ill tell you if its an SF3 or X3. Although either way you're going to need custom tunes for it

yea, it's an SF3. i just looked on their site and it says: NOTE: This SCT device does NOT arrive with Preloaded Tune files specifically for your vehicle and will require a Custom Tune(s) be purchased from one of SCT Custom Tuning Dealers. To locate an SCT Custom Tuning Dealer near you click here: http://www.sctflash.com/DealerLocations.php

ok, searching the site a little more, it says they come w/ canned tunes but none specific to my vehicle.

i would have to pay for fred to do custom work but if i just want whatever SCT has to offer then no since they come w/ the unit.

The custom tune will be nice though especially if you have any performance mods he can take advantage of

yea, i don't plan on getting anything for a bit. next is pre-key/larger tires. then exhaust, then pulleys.

at that point i'll consider getting a custom tune.

the unit doesnt have any tunes for your truck at all. like korey said, you'll need custom tunes regardless because SF3's dont have any pre-canned tunes for a ranger. basically, custom tune or nothing.
SCT is the best tuner you can get once you have appropriate tunes made for you

so neither the X3 or the SF3 have tunes on them when you get them? or is it just the SF3 that doesn't?

http://sctflash.com/products.php?PID=2&VID=742
this link says pre loaded. that isn't included already?

x3 has nothing SF3 does but SCT doesnt have tunes preloaded on any product for a ranger so whatever you have on your SF3, none of it will apply to your truck

this is confusing. the site says "comes preloaded" when a person searches for a tuner from the vehicle scroll down. however there are none?

so my rent's spent $x.99 on a tuner w/ no tunes? but if i want tunes i have to purchase those separately?

yeah it comes preloaded but nothing for a ranger is preloaded on them and they don't offer anything for rangers. Their products do work on rangers but nothing directly from them will give you tunes.

To help eliminate confusion:
select 2008 ranger 4.0L then it will list the different products and under each "preloaded" one you'll see "will not come with pre loaded tunes for your vehicle"

go back and select 2008 F-series superduty 6.4L and the red message you got that says "will not come with preloaded tunes for your vehicle" won't be there because the unit DOES have tunes for that truck.

Basically, with what you have right now you can't do anything until you get a custom tune

that disappointing and is misleading. so to answer my question about what my parents purchased, they bought a "tune adapter" or "larger USB"?
