hi all, names steve and im new here but have had my ranger for 3.5 years now its a 2000 v6 4.0 with 4x4 finally just got all the mechanical stuff fixed from a roll over 2 years ago.

now i want to redo the exhaust, everything is still stock except i put a K&N in it. i mainly want to do this to help boost my MPG's, get some extra power and torque out of it and help the engine run smoother so i can get another 100K or so out of her.

i know pretty much nothing about exhausts, but i am thinking about putting a set of headers on it and either doing a complete cat-back system or just switching in an aftermarket muffler if thats possible

so as a rookie i guess im asking if you were to drop in a set of headers and redo your exhaust what would you do. im hoping to keep the price of the headers under 300 and keep the overall cost under 800 or so

If I ahd the money i would do headers back. Go talk to your local midas and talk to them about doing a custom exhaust from the cats back. I work at the one downtown nashville, tn and I just did 3 in tubing from the cats back nd have noticed pedal responice it gets up and goes alot faster now.
Thats what I would do.

 

I have the 4.0 OHV and did 2.25'' cat back with a flowmaster and didnt really notice much of anything. Although it does sound a lot better. You wont get much gain in anything with just a cat back system.

 

Did you really misspell the name of the city you live in? It is Wenatchee.
You really aren't going to gain anything but noise with a catback on that engine. I had a 2.5" catback and didn't notice any power increase on my 98 4.0L OHV. Just keep up on maintenance; Oil changes, correct plugs/wires, fuel/air filters, transmission/tcase/axle oil, etc etc. Save your money for replacing ball joints, tie rod ends and gaskets pretty soon.

 

i just noticed it but yeah i misspelled it, it is wenatchee and i wouldnt really call it a city, must of been a subconcious thing showing how little respect i have for this place. besides depending on who you talk to i spelled it right, one of the tribes around here spells it wenatche while another tribe spells it wenatchi and the white men spell it wenatchee, not sure why its a big deal

if i was you id just forget the catback system yes you get a little more out of your truck but if you want to get some nice sound without breaking the bank i would go down to your local shop buy a magnaflow muffler have them weld it on to replace your stock one. You can most likly get all this done for around 180. At most. It will sound nice not as good as duals or anything like that but not bad for 180 bucks or less. . And as far as the headers go. I would do dual exhaust and headers all at the same time. I just wouldent do a single catback system but thats just me... My buddy has 4.0 with duals and it sounds nice i think they are only 2.5". I wouldnt go any bigger then that.

 

trust me pay for the exhaust it will help out a lil bit and that motor you have will run almost forever, i had it before i swapped in the sohc but its an awesome motor. and yes save money for gaskets they are an issue on those motors esp. the rear main seal.

well thanks for all the replies everyone. i ended up doing a cat back with 2.25in pipe and put a flo pro chambered muffler on it, exhaust shop here in town did for 215 and had me in and out in 30 mins. sounds really good, nice deep mellow tone and very little cab drone.
