Do it. I will have a custom system built for my truck soon. I will have him take off the last cat which is after the O2 sensor. My muffler will be here tomorrow and it is one that I never seen on a Ranger before, so we'll see how that goes. lol

I think you will lose low end torque. I lose some just by unbolting my exhaust from behind the cat.

I dont understand though if you remove a cat why would you loose power? The exhaust can breathe better no resistance.

More back pressure = Usually better low end (stock exhaust/cats)

Less back pressure = Usually better top end, less low end (aftermarket exhaust/cats)

My butt dyno is more sensitive than yours. But it is true. With less back pressure the more low end power you lose. But on a turbo charged car the turbo causes enough back pressure that you can run nothing after the turbo and you will get a massive gain in power.

Ok, if you say so.... I pull 5500 pounds pretty regularly with my truck and I noticed no low end torque loss whatsoever...

This may be true, but only to a point. To max out the low end power of your motor, your not going to want 1 in. pipe and 10 cats.

Well its up to you. I wouldn't do it just for a different sound especially here in California because its a $1200 or so fine for removing or gutting a cat.

Its a fine in every state, but in a state like mine, we don't have emissions testing.... :)

I have no cats on my impala and a Hooke cat back system with Clear image Tri-y headers and I have dyno results to prove that opening up the exhaust hepled out my low end torque. Granted new vehicle cats are glorified resonators (with the advent of sequential Fuel injection cars can very easily be low emissions without cats) it really won't make much of a difference whether you have them or not. My Car is 12 years old and had very restrictive cats, that were like pushing exhaust through a shop rag.

BTW no emisions here or wehre I am going!

So what are you guys doing to gut your cats? I'd like to knock off the last cat after the o2 sensor, but what's the easiest way to do it?

My buddy has a 2000 Z28 6speed with no exhaust and WOW. All it has is the header and cat and so tips that point down.. The cat ends right next to your feet so the sound bounces off the ground and up into the car. Awesome. It sounds so mean. It also blows anything from under the car. There is nothing like the sound of a uncorked v8.

I'm going to just take it out all together and then the fab shop will just start from there. I think, we'll see.

Oh, and I am going to a real fab shop, so he wont ***** that he cant take a cat off or anything.

I think I'll just see how it goes for you and then I'll fab something up that bolts in. But with people saying that it changes exhaust tone, in what way? Just resonating more or a deeper tone?

I don't recommend removing any emmisions related item but back pressure in the exhaust is never good. Sometimes people misinterpret things like larger pipe = lower pressure so that must be causing the loss of low end torque. I am not going into the dynamics of what causes this loss but removing a cat and relacing it with a pipe the same size as the pipes on either side will not cause a loss in low end torque. However, gutting a cat WILL most likely result in a loss in low end torque.

Removing or disabling the cat will result in higher emmisions under certain conditions and will make the exhaust slightly louder. It will most likely result in no increase in performance due to the better design of todays catalytic converters.
