K&N Heat Shield Question

has anyone had to cut off some of the lining( dont remember what its called) that you put around the heat shield because i have put it on an have about 3 to 4 inches hanging off, did i not put in on correctly or is there just extra?

Its extra. I cut the excess off so it looks clean.
