My truck recently started making a knocking noise, but its not an engine knock. It only does it at idle when its warm. has anyone else experienced this?

does it sound like a gremlin in pounding your hood trying to get out... lik continuous thumping? that is what i got...

 

There is a TSB on this. there is a lower coolant hose that must be replaced. steam pockets build up in the cooling system and cause this thumping noise. Redneckstone had to get this hose from my work. Go to your dealership and tell them that you need the TSB part for your coolant system

 

are u sure its the same thing though? my buddy thinks its the water pump. its not a thumping noise with my truck, its an actual knock. it sounds just like an engine knock but its not constant

 

When it happens is it intermittent? grab the upper radiator hose and see if it jumps when it happens

His profile says it is an 04 FX4, so its a SOHC right??

I just discovered this forum and it is great! I too have a 91 ranger 4.0 V6 and have had the thumping noise on/off for several years. sounds like it is coming from inside my glovebox. were you able to fix the problem? if so, how? Thanks.
