truck starts funny

here lateley, the truck starts funny every so often.
it cranks everytime, usually just fine, trun the key and it starts right up. BUT EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE....maybe every 10 crank, it will start funny. it hesitates like it takes an extra second or two to crank and fire up...you know like when a vehicle wont crank nad just truns over repeatedly. well mine will do that but only for a second and then fires right up...it worries me. my papa thought i may need to replace the fuel filter bc it may have accumilated water...any ideas on this guys....

btw i have 4.0 and an auto

i have never seen a fuel filter effect how a truck runs or drives, but its cheap so you could replace it.

when i turn the key i always wait for the fuel pump to stop priming before i go to start. Are you sure you are just not cranking it faster? Flip it to run wait a second then crank.

My dads 2002 Exploder XLT hesitates every time we start it up, been doing it for 2 years, no problems. Maybe its a SOHC thing.

+1

I always sit mine in the key on position for a few seconds before I start it up.

some times it can be early signs of a fuel pump going bad... the pump cant keep pressure to the fuel rail and it leaks back into the tank. a shop can hook up a pressure tester to the rail and check this. if this is the case its just a sign, and can last quite a while

I have noticed that if I don't hold the starter on long enough to get the engine started the first time, it will take a longer time to crank before it starts the second time. It has done this since I bought it in 05. You know what I say about it? Its a Ford. Its probably normal.

I have the something happening. if i turn the key and give it a second or two ... it starts up even worse... im thinking that its my battery and or the battery cable coming from the starter... it seems stiff and crunchy, like its corroded inside. my last ranger had the same issue but it had a higher cranking amp battery which worked well. but i would try to get it replaced if you have a warranty. im not sure but i think the wiring costs $60-80 to buy. it looks like a pita to do yourself.

yeah i have had similar issues as well..

just the very odd time it will hesitate when i crank it over... also i always let it 'prime' for a second or two as well..

also lately ive been watching how far i twist the key... some early mornings ive noticed that i dont fully twist it and thats when ive had the hesitations... so as i say just been trying to twist it fully and i havent noticed the hesitation since..
