Help with MPG/HP
have any of you guys know of some good ways to boost gas milage and improve performance? I have done some research and have been looking into an cold air intake. Do these really save gas and improve performance? I have been told by a couple of people that it dosen't do any good without doing some excast changes. Just wanted to get some ideas opinions from you all.
I have a 2000 ranger with a 4.0 v-6 4 wheel drive. I am wanting to do this with the least amount of money. Any suggestions?

mileage and power gains go about as ordered, top to bottom roughly:
XCal 2 Tuner
Underdrive Drive Pulley Kit
Cold Air Intake
Exhaust
Headers
Tire size is also debatable.. Gearing for correct RPM's.. make an engine breath better, and it performs better generally with a proper tune, as well as usually netting a slight increase in MPG's depending on driving habits.

^^not necessarily.
A more economical running engine creates more power, and also creates better fuel efficiency. I'm not talking like a greeny here...i'm talking the actual running of the engine....how is it running?
For example.....
A member here had a '03 FX4 Level 2, 8" lift on 35's, and supercharged. Tons of power when he needed it. And when he was just drivin' around, not hammering it, it got BETTER mpg than stock.
Another example....
The 1200ft lb Cummins down the road can TEAR IT UP on the strip running low 12 second 1/4 miles. Yet...he still gets 18mpg regularly.
Yes...when the skinny pedal is used in excess, yes more fuel is burned. BUT, even if it's a 400hp corvette, it'll get 25mpg in the city still. It's all dependent on the little skinny pedal.

If you dont see a need for it.. a standard daily driver wouldnt notice too much of a difference in a new intake.. minus the deeper tone of the exhaust, and the always cool intake sucking in sound

but.....that tube the aftermarket uses doesn't suck shut like the stock rubber "crinkle tube" does. And the aftermarket tubes are smooth flowing...that's helps.
So...I want to make a custom setup using a SLP/Roush Thunderbolt airbox, and a custom mandrell bent intake pipe. I love that intake.....it's FRESH COOL AIR coming in from the headlamp area, completely sealed off from the engine. I noticed the best performacne from that box w/ the stock crinkle tube..just image a good tube and that box...can't wait.
