About the only thing you can do is make sure your tire pressure is the maximum listed on the sidewall. If you don't pay attention to rotation however your tires will wear in the middle, some people say it rides rough...whatever, it's a truck deal with it. Eliminate warm up time, eliminate stops on your trips.

I get 21: half city, half fwy at 75, but I have the 3.08 axle and auto in a 95 supercab with 100k miles. A/C on or off makes no difference.
best I ever got was 28 on a 400 mile trip, doing about 70 the whole way (~2100 rpm)
This is after verifying my odo was not even 1% off using the roadside mile markers to check.

I do almost all highway (55 mph to 75 mph). I just got my Ranger a few days ago and on the second tank of gas I'm averaging about 24-25 mpg on the highway. I keep my scan gauge activated to monitor what I'm getting and it's almost spot on when I have it in my other cars. I have an 4.0L '04 XLT 4x4 with stock tire size (245/75/16, but it has Goodyear Tracker 2 tires). Nothing else is done to the motor or the truck, but I'll see how things go when I change all the fluids and clean out the TB and IAC. I know it's still new and I'm only 1/2 way through my second tank, but I'll keep you all posted on what I get around here.
