LOW LOW LOW RPMS
 

it's getting too bad to deal woth anymore. I know people always post and ask this question but how the hell do i fix it. When i crank it cold it cranks and the RPM's stay high like they should. After i run right up the road, turn it off, then crank back up it will almost dye after it cranks. When i stop at red lights with the A/C on they will drop low enough for me to have to hold the brake down with my left foot and tap the gas peddle to pick them back up. I have cleaned the MAF and throttle body. I'm lost at what to do now. If you know any suggestions post them up. Make sure to be detailed about to fix it though. Most people just post what the problem is and leave no description of how to fix it. Thanks lots

How did you 'clean' the MAF? How are the plugs looking on the outside of the MAF?

I seriously think you have a coolant temperature sensor problem. If for some reason it is MAF related and you need a new one, I have an extra brand new one (I think 2 actually) - I don't know if your truck takes the same MAF as my 3.0.

IAC?

+1 try cleaning your IAC (idle air control valve).

wheres the IAC???????????? i've head of this working but never knew where o look or how to clean it.

It's mounted next to your throttle body, and has a two wire connector on it.

wait a sec, theres a something mounted to the throttle body that goes in to it. it has two philip screws holding it on, but it has 3 wires going to it. then on the intake tube before the throttle body theres another sort of sensor that has 2 wires goin to it. which of these if either should i be cleaning?????

yup i got it off now i'm just trying to figure out what to spray in there to clean it. i don't want to harm anything so tell me what yall used to clean it. thanks

Air intake cleaner or MAF cleaner. Its like carb cleaner but its sensor safe. Just spray the ports down. Try and get as much black off as you can.

MAF cleaner so i'll use that. i got some pictures of how dirty it was though and i'll post them before i go clean it.

Are the wires in your MAF sensor still together?

^yes, but IAC was definately the problem. She has never ran this great since i've owned her. Awesome quick fix, thanks brian, robert, and christian. And R-F. i'm bout to roll to work, 30 minutes of driving, we'll see how she does with the a/c on the whole time.

Hello JRacer, I'm glad your truck is running great now, i hope that i have the same issue as you and it will be a quick fix like yours, Well guys instead of starting a new thread i thought i would just post it here because im having almost the same issue as JRacer, at high RPM's its all good, Freeway travels no problem, now when i get in stop and go traffic or surface streets when my RPMs drop to around 500 or when i let off the gas the truck will putter out and die, once i get to the side of the road the damn thing will not start again! i have to press the fuel release button that is located under the passenger side dash and even then i have to start the truck real quick and get on the gas or it will just keep puttering out and dieing.. do i have an IAC issue as well or could this be something more serious?

The switch under the dash is a fuel cutoff switch. When you get in an accident a metal ball inside touches metal which opens the circuit cutting power to the fuel pump. Are you sure that holding it actually helps? Maybe you have a bad pump.

im 100% sure it helps haha it fires up almost instantly after hitting that button, and trust me i just figured that out, i was sitting on the side of the road for 30min-1hr before trying to start it normally without draining my battery, now i just hit that button and bam we are rocking instantly.

Bad switch then or just part of the problem. Maybe you could try to bypass the switch to see if your truck will start normally.

what by just unpluging the switch under the dash? also i took the IAC off to look at that and that mofo is diiirty! imma run down to autozone and grab some MAF cleaner real quick and try that... if that doesnt work then ill just unplug the switch under the dash, does that switch run off of a fuse or relay? maybe its the relay?

well heres an update, i cleaned the IAC and what not, cant tell yet if its going to work or not, it died on the way back from autozone so i tried un-plugging the switch and it wont even start at all, i plugged it back in and it fires right up, there are only two things i can link it to at this point and you guys tell me what you think, 1) Fuel Filter 2) Fuel kill switch (What is the exact name of this part?) let me know what you guys think.

I mean bypass it by using a jumper wire. The switch is called the fuel inertia switch.

let me give that a try ill be back with an update.

UPDATE: did a bypass with a wire and still runs a little weird little bouncy/puttery (basicly the same as when its on the switch) Going to get a new Fuel filter tomorrow and swap that out, thats really the only thing i can think off at this point. if its not that then it must be fuel pump going out.
