I ordered a set of Felpro gaskets and the lower intake gasket is a a 2 piece. The Hanes manual says to put RTV around the 4 coolant ports and then on top of the gasket. In the manual a one piece gasket is used. Do I need to use the RTV the way the manual says to do it?

Not sure of your engine but I replaced the upper and lower intake gaskets on my 99 4.0 OHV engine last April. The replacement is a two piece gasket. I a put RTV around the coolant ports and the valley but not on top. This is not my pic but it represents my use of Ultra Black RTV
