Major Starting problem !! Help !! AGAIn!!
 

Okay heres the facts. 1992 ranger xlt ext cab with the v6 4.0 5 spd manual.
Put a new starter on, new Solenoid. Still no power to the starter. 12v going to relay(solenoid) Battery reading slightly above 12.5v
When I attempt to start at ignition, the few idiot lights I have (full gauges) dim like they should. (As I said 12v going to solenoid)
Will Not jump start.
Do you think I got a bad starter ? Is there a fusable link somewhere in there. Maybe my battery cables ?
When I jumper from positive terminal of battery to solenoid it clicks but no starter action.
Should I check the voltage at the starter terminals to see if i'm getting anything to the starter ?
I lost my owners manual but I do have a Haynes.

Okay heres an update. Starter is now working. However whenever i connect my battery cables the truck starts even with the keys in my pocket. The only way to shut off the truck is to disconnect a battery cable. Of course that does not work if I've turned the ignition on. What do ya think and ignition switch problem ? IS the switch in the start position permanently ?

Thanks. Man I got to get this truck fixed I've really enjoyed it up to now.

First place to start would be checking your cables and making sure everything is grounded properly.

check all the cable connections, at the battery and EVERY end of a cable. if just one is even loose, it may not start. does it click when you use the key to try and start it? how old is the battery? even if youre showing 12.5 volts just sitting there, it may be too dead to give you the cranking amps you need.

since its a stick, i would get that bad boy push started and get it over to autozone etc. get the battery and alternator tested. check the cables first though!! make sure they all have tight CLEAN connections

Isnt there a switch so you cant start it without the clutch pushed in?
maybe it went bad.

I just checked the cables from the battery to the starter. 12v good. (plus the connections on the battery are scrubbed clean and tight) removed the starter and jumpered it to the battery. Nada, nothing, not a whimper or a sound from the starter. I assume (uh oh) that the starter should run if hooked up directly.
