mpg and plugs

i bought my truck used and the guy before me changed plugs in it. He changed them to the bosch platinum plugs. I have herd some guys having troubles with these plugs and some guys say they worked just fine. Also after working on the truck a little iv notice the guy had a tendincy to do half a** jobs. so i was wondering what other people are getting for mpg on the 4.0 SOHC engine. this way i could compare sense i never drove the truck without these plugs in them thanks.

I think they were the Bosch Platinum 4's

foxrider1987 03-29-2009 07:51 PM

i got the box because he had some extras and there just bosch platinums that he put in it

BigRedDog 03-29-2009 08:51 PM

Too hot a plug will generally give the feel of more power down low. Too cold a plug will make it stumble until the plugs get to the right temp. Otherwise.. the plugs don't really effect MPG more than about 0.25 to maybe 0.5mpg at the most.

Now if your talking an unshrouded type of plug.. there might be a 0.5mpg gain there. And that's only a maybe..

I don't know why but all I ever hear are horror stories about Bosch plugs in ford trucks. I always figured it was people having a bad day until the same thing happened to me. I had bosch plugs and they lasted about 20,000 miles before they all started to fail one by one.

foxrider1987 04-09-2009 04:01 PM

changed the plugs and wiress. turns out guy that had it before i did decided to start changing plugs got half way done and decided he didnt want to do it any more. so I had three motocraft plugs in it and 3 bosch plugs in it. the truck has 87000 miles

Its understandable once you have to try to get the passenger side ones out. They suck.

Dadinator 04-10-2009 11:44 AM

No kidding. I just replaced all 6 with wires last weekend.:headache:
What a pain. I was cursing the engineers the whole time.

I replaced mine, because it was missing down low. The plugs looked OK. I got autolite platinum with autolite wires.

Runs better. I haven't checked the mileage lately. But; I used to get between 18 - 20 on the highway.

Avoid Bosch Platinum +Anythings like the plague, the multi-pronged monstrosities cannot be gapped and pre-packaged, have a tiny gap compared to what Ford requires.

Not to mention its a gimmick, electricity travels down the path of least resistance, it won't split up and travel down two, three, four or six different prongs, no matter the shape or size. By that time the plug is fouled out and its pointless how many prongs it has.

Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer that still uses Bosch plugs as OE, and not a single one of them are these multi-pronged wallet lighteners.

that exactly what it was. the three on the driver side were done and the three on the passenger side were still from factory. i put autolite platinums as well. but the only wires that were available without ordering were duralast so thats what i got for wires. with plugs and wires done know im getting about 16 mpg doin 75 most o the time.

Completely stock typically 20 - 22. Must have had a heck of a tail wind the last time I filled up cause I somehow got 24.6 avg for the entire tank.
