Need Help

Today on the way home from work my truck started acting weird.....the ABS light came on and my speedo started jumping back and forth......at idle speed it went away but when i accelerated it came back. Any ideas as to what this is trying to tell me?

might want to check out the abs sensors.

also if the abs light was on, there is a code which can be read by the dealer to tell you what is wrong.

The signal for the speedometer on 1998~2000 Rangers is taken from the ABS sensor reading the tone ring in the rear differential. There are two common causes for the symptoms you have on your 99.

One is a failure of the sensor itself and it is easy to change. Look for it on top of the differential case. It can be swapped out from the outside without disturbing anything inside the housing.

The other problem can be the connection from the interior wiring harness to the rear harness. It is a large 40-pin connector under the driver seat and is accessible from under the truck. Unscrew the center bolt, open it up and look for water or corroded terminals inside. Even if there is none, it is good preventative maintenance to pack this vulnerable connector with dielectric grease, available at Ford dealers and auto parts stores.

ok so i pretty much checked everything under the truck. I found that i had a loose ground which was contributing to some of the funny light behavior i experienced. I tightened the ground and disconnected the battery and then re-hooked it. But the ABS light is still on and the speedo still doesnt work. What is the proper way of re-setting the computer?

So did you ever figure out why the speedo was floating?
