New Top end..

I am looking to redo my entire top end at around 100k miles. And i am wondering what everyone recommends for parts such as lifters, pistons, heads, rockers, and cams.

I am looking to redo it for performance when i do so any part recommedations and any input at all would be great.

or is it just cheaper to buy a new motor?

Check this out

They have some pretty good performance parts for your engine.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 10:13 AM

Thanks. do you know much about these parts?

0RangerEdge2 Oct 13, 2008 10:17 AM

I'll let you look. It's pretty pricey but cheaper than a new engine.

It's listed with the description of the cylinder head.

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 10:27 AM

Why do you want to do the top end? Does it need it?

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 10:29 AM

I dont know if it does.. I just know im hard on my truck.. and after 100k thats when problems arise.. And i hear most real performance comes from redoing heads and boring out the motor and stuff.

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 10:31 AM

I have 112K and I used to beat the crap out of mine and it runs just fine.

The reason I'm concerned is because to do the top end you have to take the engine out of the truck. There are 2 timing chains in front and one on the back. It takes special tools to get all that off.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 10:34 AM

Well it seems almost cheaper to find a wrecked one with 60000 miles on it or something like that.. otherwise building it will be pretty expensive it sounds being i cant do most of this myself...

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 10:36 AM

Just save your money. Unless your engine is smoking, knocking or just plain not running right then don't worry about it.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 10:38 AM

Well its not really knocking.. i hear a ticking.. but i think its just the cam i hear.. she runs like a champ just needs a new clutch which im a try to do myself... im a need a lot of luck on that one.

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 10:39 AM

What kind of clicking? Does it sound like someone is clicking a pen in and out quickly?

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 10:42 AM

sorta.. its like a rolling tick tick tick tick.. it comes from the top of the motor though.. its not a lifter cause i have removed a plug while its running and i know what that sounds like totally different.

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 10:46 AM

I would have to hear it. More than likely it's just your injectors or maybe even an exhaust manifold leak. The 4.0s also have a timing chain rattle problem. At just under 3000 RPM the engine will make a rattling sound. Ford is awesome and they basically said we screwed up but we are not paying for it. So they issued a TSB instead of a recall. They did however extend the warranty for the 4.0 Exploders since they paid more for their cars.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 11:00 AM

hmm are injectors easy replacements?

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 11:04 AM

I have never done it. I don't think they are hard to do.

What I'm saying is that you might just be hearing injector noise. They are normally loud.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 11:09 AM

Oh hmm maybe nothing seems wrong at all and i keep all fluids changed.. know much about clutches??

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM

Unless it's slipping then it fine. Another problem with these truck is the slave cylinder. It likes to go out often and you have to take the transmission off to get to it. You can tell when it's going out when you can't get into gear at a light. Mine got so bad that I had to pump the clutch like 40 times before I drove anywhere.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 11:22 AM

Yeah i wanna do my slave.. I dont think its holding up very well.. and maybe even have my flywheel resurfaced.. i am just not sure what to use to support my tranny..

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 11:31 AM

Tranny has to come out. You would need a tranny jack. Also I have heard that separating the t case from the tranny before you pull the tranny make the job easier. Also if you change the clutch change the pilot bearing while you are there. Clutch parts are fairly cheap if you stay with stock. If you are upgrading it can get sort of pricey. Here is a good stock kit. Centerforce, Zoom and Spec make aftermarket clutches. I have a Centerforce but it chatters. I think it's the clutch design because the Centerforce I had on before did the same. It does grab when you need it to.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 11:42 AM

Yeah can i use a regular jack?? and hmm does autozone rent tranny jacks hahaha..

Is it easy to disconnect everything around tranny? such as.. drive lines. skid plates... and the y-pipe..

whippersnapper02 Oct 13, 2008 11:47 AM

The top of a regular jack is too small. You could probably do it if you are very careful. Or you can get an adapter for the top of the jack.

Taking everything else around the tranny off is fairly easy. Get a service manual to help you.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 11:49 AM

Okay that is what i will do.. is it possible to do in one day??

It all depends on your skills.

jaycheetwood Oct 13, 2008 12:00 PM

haha.. uhh.. well i know how to take things off and i know what most things are.. its a matter of just not dropping the tranny and i mean that literally hahaha..

I hear you dont need to move the tranny far to really get in there and work and that there is alot of room under our trucks.
