OBD2 Drive procedures?

I have a 97 4.0 sohc. I'm trying to get my scanner linked up to the computer so I can look at some live readings from the o2 sensors. The scanner wants me to do a driving procedure but I am not able.

Is there a way around this or even scanners that don't require a driving procedure?

This won't help you but I've never heard of an "unready car" stopping a code reader / scanner from working.
Which reader / scanner do you have?

P1000 is a normal code to have if battery in a vehicle is ever unhooked, or if someone does a full reset of computer, not just clearing the codes with a reader

But as said it is just a code, shouldn't prevent a reader from checking other PIDs

PIDs are codes the reader sends to the computer to get specific data back from the computer, OBD2 protocol(communication standards)
You don't need to know any of that just saying thats how it works, more info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBD-II_PIDs

Most sensor data is not available until engine is warmed up, O2 sensors don't work until they are above 650degF, so may be after 3 or 4 minutes of run time depending on outside temp
But you should be able to read other live data, like Coolant Temp or Air Temp as long as computer is on

P1000 could mean there is a computer problem as well, and if you can't get any other data that may be whats happening, long shot for sure, but not a no shot

Yes the battery has been unhooked. Everything else works in live mode including My ign adv, tps, iat, and engine temp. I'll try it after I drive it some. All fuel trims show -100. One is closed one says NA. I have seen system 1 say open before but it didn't stay this way. Idk much about the electronics side just mechanical. Currently chasing an intermittent miss

O2 sensors are not working

They should have a voltage from 0.1 to 0.9

Engine temp shows warmed up
Air temp looks OK
Fuel system 1 is closed loop, thats right, engine temp above 150deg should show this as closed
There is no Fuel system 2
spark(IGN) advance is correct

Everything looks like it should but no O2 sensor data at all

You 1997 Ranger, so would have a 4.0l OHV engine, unless you swapped it out to a SOHC, but wouldn't matter for O2s

In a 1997 check Fuse #3 15amp in engine bay fuse box, that's the O2 heater power, but don't think that could cause no readings on all 3 O2s
O2s generate their own voltage, so not "powered", the heaters are to warm them up faster

Only thing that makes sense is that they are all unplugged, they do share a common "ground" wire, the orange wire, but its connected to the grey/red wire shared with ALL sensors on the engine, so there would be a fist full of codes if that wire was bad, lol

97 explorer SOHC with the variable intake. I've just been throwing $ at it because I'm not sure what's going on. I've replaced the upper and lower intake o-rings, spark plugs and wire set(drivers side plugs had slightly melted electrodes, passenger side was fine), all (4) o2 sensors replaced, fuel filter, tested fuel pressure, cleaned the MAF, spark from coil is strong even during the misfire,I put negative pressure on all the vacuum lines with other ends plugged off and no leaks were present. So I bought a scanner to see if it's starving itself, but no luck on seeing any data and I feel like it's the driving procedure being incomplete.

Read "enabling criteria" and "OBD2 drive cycle". Tell me what u think

So not a Ranger engine

The Enabling Criteria has nothing to do with current issues
That is just telling you that certain "parameters" need to be in a certain range for computer to start the emissions test, these are all emissions tests
Like engine temp needs to be above 170degF, and air temp between 40-100degF before computer will start the tests

You can read Ford's Drive cycle reset and tests here: Ford Motor Company Driving Cycle

The engine should run fine after reset, thats the only way you could complete the drive cycle tests, so...................something else is wrong
Yes, explorer 4.0l SOHC would have dual exhaust so 4 O2 sensors

It could be your reader is not sending the correct PIDs to computer, so is not getting any data back, or the wrong PID in the case of -100 LTFT
OR
O2 sensors are still not connected
OR
computer has failed in O2 circuits and fuel trim section

If engine is running I would tend to think its a OBD Reader issue

I just replaced o2's and they're plugged in.
I Could try an find someone with another scanner, specific brand I should look for?
Maybe it is computer. Hopefully I figure out what's doing it.
It runs fine at times and other times it has a bad miss.

I swapped in a T5 from a 2005 mustang about 3 years ago so the computer has no idea how fast I'm going

A $20 Bluetooth OBD2 reader works fine if you have a smartphone, APPs are free or $5 for the more advanced software, start with FREE, lol

4.0l's eat spark plugs, when were that last changed, and big gaps, 0.054
Motorcraft or Autolite seem to last the longest, NGK are "OK"

How old are the spark plug wires?
15 years is about the limit on Motorcraft, 8 years for other brands

Plugs and wires are most common cause of a come and go misfire

Crossed harness plugs on o2 sensors purposely and the computer recognized it during a KOER test. Swapped them back and took it for a drive. I caught 14.8 on the fuel trim in freeze frame data but still no live data for oxygen sensors.

I have monitors on my HF zr8 that I am curious on how to make them go green, I will include a pic if anyone has any idea on how to make the ones in red turn green.
