Oil Filter Best One and which one.

Which oil filter should i use to change my oil. What brand and which one exactly. 2002 Ford Ranger 4.0 SOHC

dixie_boysles 10-29-2010 05:25 AM

Motorcraft FL-820S

FULLSCALE 10-29-2010 05:25 AM

Everyone will have their own opinion but I use the premium line carquest filter #85372 made by wix.

I think as long as its not a FRAM, you're good to go. I searched, seems like either Stone or Shane posted a pic of all the filters in exploded view but i cant find it. The FRAM had a paper filter i think

I believe its the filter ends that are the big issue with them. I think they are cardboard and they basically fall apart.

IMO, ford wouldn't put their name on a crappy filter because they would be replacing motors left and right. I only use motorcraft oil and filters

04blackedge 10-29-2010 08:32 AM

Motorcraft has always worked for me.

dixie_boysles 10-29-2010 08:49 AM

X2, just got a new one put on yesterday

Ford04Ranger4.0 10-29-2010 09:07 AM

Motorcraft or napa filters

vista4.0 10-29-2010 09:11 AM

i usually just get a motorcraft.

KLC 10-29-2010 09:39 AM

Nine times out of ten is a motorcraft. Right now I have a K&N because of the combo deal O'reilys had.

djfllmn 10-29-2010 02:50 PM

motorcraft or purolater...same thing...purolater makes motorcraft filters

silverfox 10-29-2010 02:52 PM

mototcraft filter and fluid runs me 16 bucks to do a oil change

btm757 10-29-2010 02:54 PM

Motorcraft is pretty much all I will use

it is dirt cheap to change oil in our trucks...my dads VW they charge 12 bucks for the damn filter:261: but thats VW for ya

btm757 10-29-2010 02:58 PM

^ Try a Mercedes motor. 150 for a Chrysler Crossfire at the dealer.

djfllmn 10-29-2010 02:59 PM

holy sh!t...just for an oil change!

btm757 10-29-2010 03:04 PM

Yep they use like 9qts Mobil 1 Full Syn. 0w-40 and a cartridge type filter.

Oil is over $12 a qt

djfllmn 10-29-2010 03:08 PM

wow...vw charges like 70 and they get pissed because i do all that crap myself...but cant change the oil in that car without doin a little of this:banghead: lol

Haha that is VW for ya. When I had my 86 this is what I did when I had to buy a part :dead:

djfllmn 10-29-2010 03:20 PM

yep expensive as hell and a pound of sh!t in a half pound bag

leadfoot 10-29-2010 05:15 PM

I use the the Purolator premium filters with the mustard color grippy stuff on it. However there was a deal 5qrts of mobil 1 synthetic + a regular Purolator filter for $15 so I got two of those deals.

245Ranger 10-30-2010 10:43 PM

I will only use either motorcraft or the premium wix filters (Napa Gold, Carquest-not sure which line though).

ScottG 10-31-2010 06:08 AM

I could care less on filter being good or bad, i run a fram tuffguard on my trucks and Mobil 1 filter on the wife's jeep

but at the most, i go 5k between oil changes, so going out of my way to get a motorcraft filter, when i would at a part and service shop, is a waste of time
