Overheating
The trucks been running hot since I got in some water. Did a little mud runnin and since the truck is running hott. Today just driving about 2.5 miles my tranny got up to 210. The fluid is good not burnt or anything. The cooling fan is constantly running too. Any suggestions on what it could be. I tried pressure washing the radiator from the engine side i cleaned all the mud off the tranny and the tranny cooler.
Did you flush out the tranny cooler too? (right in front of the rad)
If you have them both clean, then you should'nt have a cooling issue. Rich |
how should i go about flushing the tranny cooler? pull the two lines off the bottom and just blast it with hose?
Check for a buildup of crud between the tranny cooler and radiator.Don't pull the hoses , but maybe unbolt it and swing it out a little.
there really isnt much back there..i dont think thats the problem.
Replaced the thermostat..engine and tranny stayed cool while idling. While driving though both got hot. Not as hot as they were before. Tranny got to around 200 and the temp gauge got to about 1/8 away from the H on the gauge
What degree thermostat did you put in?
It probably isn't the problem, just asking. |
192..wrongzones computer said thats what they come with was the 192..The water pump isnt weaping so i dont think my water pump is bad. I dont understand why the transmission is running so hott to if its a seperate cooler. Im gonna buy a heavy duter cooler tommorow and see what that does for that.
any of your tranny lines to the cooler kinked/blocked?
not that i can tell i followed them back to tranny and they looked good

Sounds like a coolant flow problem.Check the belt tensioner to be sure it moves without binding. The belt may be turning the pump okay at idle but slip at higher rpm's. |
i dont think thats it because i couldnt even get the belt tensioner to budge this afternoon..then again i wasnt exactly sure which way to pulling and whatnot with the ratchet
well took the truck to local tranny shop..tranny and front differential needs to be rebuilt. !050 for front diff and 1290 for the transmission..I think im just going to get rid of the truck..
If the belt tensioner won't "budge" it's not keeping the belt tight. This leads to slippage. At higher rpm the engine produces more heat.If the pump isn't turning fast enough the coolant gets too hot when it reaches the radiator.Hotter coolant in the radiator raises the temp in the tranny lines running through it.Don't the tranny lines run through the radiator first and then to the auxilary cooler?
yes the do..how do you suppose i should try to change that belt tensioner out then..?
It's mounted with one bolt to the block.Advance Auto has them for about $35 here. The pulley is bolted to the tensioner arm which is bolted to the block.
You might try first removing the tensioner then spray PB Blaster into the back side .Then remount it to the block (notice the locating pin on the back of the tensioner) put a wrench on the pulley bolt and try to carefully work it loose. Note the travel of the arm is limited to about 40 degrees maybe less , so don't try to force it past the stops. |
