P0442 engine code

Its a EVAP leak. Could be anywhere in the EVAP system. Gas cap is the easiest if your really lucky. Best thing to do is have a shop smoke the EVAP system for the leak. Look for mouse damage they chew holes in the hoses sometimes. Look at the wires on the EVAP vent valve at the charcoal canister, if they are chewed off the pcm cannot close it and it will be a leak. Rust holes in the fuel filler tube are common also. If you dont find a visual cause smoke is the best way to find it.

OBD-II Trouble Code: P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)
CausesA code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
•A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
•A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
•A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
•Other small leak in EVAP system
•Faulty vent o-ring seal
Possible SolutionsWith a P0442, the most common repair is to:
•Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
•Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
•Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
Most likely your gas cap seal is dry rotted or flattened....cheap fix to just buy a new one.

My 01 Edge 3.0 has this code, It showed up shortly after I installed a new fuel pump. I did this install by dropping the tank. To do this, I had to remove all the lines, lower and then drag the tank out from under the truck.
When I went to reinstall the tank, I was basically lying on the ground and reaching up and around the tank to reconnect all the lines by feel. I am going reseat the line that goes back to the EVAP system, clear the code and see if it comes back. I'm pretty sure my filler line and cap are OK. If the code comes back I will have to go have the smoke test done. Anyone know how much that costs?
