hey guys ive read on here numerous time that you actuall improve your fuel mileage with bigger tires..i too had 4 56 gears in my truck..but took them out DID NOT LIKE THEM!! so i got some 410's...how does this improve your fuel economy? just wondering you wouldnt think you'd gain you'd think u'd lose mileage with bigger tires. also...anyone know how to weld up a rear end? got pix? im sick of my one wheel peel! i got the limited slip but never lays possi : ( so i wanna welder up!

 

Bigger tires will decrease your fuel mileage. Plain and simple. You will have more reciprocating mass (they are harder to turn) plus knobby tires have more rolling resistance.

A welded rear end isn't good for anything other than a straight line. Have it rebuilt or put a better posi unit in like Eaton, Torsion, or Auburn....

 

just find a stock LS unit..

and get bigger tires and suck up the lose (:

 

welding the LS unit is not going to be as easy if you were welding an open rear. Welding an open rear is fairly simple but a LS is more difficult. But I am with these guys^^ don't weld it anyway get a GOOD LS unit or get a selectable or automatic locker. I have an automatic locker and I love it.

The locker works great and I never know its back there unless I really need it. Then I notice the difference over the LS I had. On the road I never have any problems. Driving it in the rain was not much different than my LS so I guess the LS worked well.

 

how much will 33's decreade mpg

 

In the city it will decrease your MPG but on highway it will improve your gas mileage. ex. you get a baseball and a softball give each 3 full turns witch goes futher? The larger your rolling mass on highway the less RMPs your turn thus less gas....going from stock to 33s on my truck mine highway mpg improved about 3-4mpgs but its killing me in the city with 3.73 gears

 

Auto vs manual tranny also makes a big difference. I have and Auto and with 3.73's and 33's my highway was not good because the tranny kept downshifting constantly. I acutally got better mileage city because of this.

 

I've got a 4.0L '05 FX4. I've got 4.10s and I haven't done anything to engine apart from a cold-air intake from K&N. I noticed it wasn't quite a punchy when I threw the 33's on there, but now I don't really realize it. I just had to do like HighRoller said.. and suck it up.

 

I also have a auto and mine doesent downshift unless i put my foot off in it to pass someone to get it to downshift i have to put the gas pedal down almost halfway. with my stock tires my rpm's at 65 was 2700-2800 now its 2450-2500 rpm with the 33s

 

I have to go along with that one, too. I've got an auto with 4.10s and I have to stomp it to the floor to downshift.

 

Holly SHAT!!!! I am at 2500 RPM's at 80.... I would like to put 4.10's in my truck but I think that my towing abilities would be ruined because my RPM's would be out of the peak torque range at a cruise....

 

What are you runnin 3.55 gears or lower???

 

Yeah, I can't tow jack. I towed my buddy's boat once, the Ranger has never moved so slow.

 

Depends. I got better milage from a 3.08 to a 4.10 open with 33x12.50 from 225/75/14.

 

It was a 3.55 but then i put a larger tire on, so now its more like a 3.42.... I had no idea that a 4.10 put you that high in the rev range....
