Hey im new here and would like to do something with my exhaust. Since i am in college i dont have a lot of money to spare, but cant stand the stock sound of my 1997 mazda b4000. i was thinking of just replacing the stock muffler, but should i go flowmaster of magnaflow? and. . . would it be better sound wise to keep the old pipes or just dump it after the muffler?

definitely magnaflow. stainless steel inside and out. mufflers rust from the inside out, and some other "fully stainless steel" brands only have SS casings, NOT SS inner casings of mufflers. thus, they still rust.

 

i have a flowmaster 50 series and i love it but if u want loud go with a 40 series flowmaster and i not saying anything bad about magnaflow i jsut prefer flowmaster because its louder.

magnaflow rocks but with that said all the new flowmasters are stainless inside if you get a magna get a short one lol

 

the STAINLESS flowmasters are stainless inside, and are comparable to magnaflow in pricing, but flowmaster is known to lose torque

 

I suggest keeping the stock system, all the way back, but replacing the muffler. The magnaflow is nice for what mr. cheddar said. It gives you a nice mellow muscular sound. But...is louder is what you want....go with a Flowmaster. I have a flowmaster super 40.....and LOVE IT! I believe you'll need a 2" in/out with side in/center out. It's all about personal wants. You want a better sounding exhaust, but not too loud...go with the magnaflow. You want a loud beefy good sounding system that'll be heard by all...go with a 40 series flowmaster. A mellower flowmaster is the 50 series. Both of no madderwhat you choose, enjoy the new sound. The magnaflows are cheaper too. (i think)

hey bob or kris, does the magnaflow side exit on your site exit infront of or behind the wheel?

 

you could cut the exhaust pipes after the heads, that would be cheap and loud.

 

is that american?? i was doing some reaserch and the best i can find is $115 canadian, is that good?

AWSOEM!! Ebay is the best place for flowmasters. Cheap. That's where I got mine. Yes, that was American money.

 

If you're on a budget, Dynomax is worth a look. I had a cat-back Dynomax on my old '97 4-banger and I liked it. Not too loud, and it didn't sound like a rice rocket, even with a 4-banger. And it freed up some power at the top end of the tach.

I'm looking at the current Jeg's catalog right now, but a '97 Ranger standard cab (same as your Mazda) is not listed. You can check their website and there will be more choices there. To give you an idea of what it would cost, the cat-back system for a '95 - '97 Ranger 125" wheelbase (extended cab) is $145.99. You will want to search with the criteria of a 108" wheelbase, being that you have a standard cab.

This price is for the alumanized steel, not their stainless systems. We have more than enough salt on the roads in Indiana, but in four years, I never had anything more than surface rust on the weld beads.

what size muffler should i go? Keep in mind that i am keeping the stock pipes.

i was thinking to go with magnaflow. Would the 4"X9" oval, 14"length be the best for a 4L with stock 2"pipes?

 

i thought yours had 2.25 pipes???
