pulley?

I have a weird noise coming from my engine its basically a rattling sound. I think its coming from one of the pulleys. I replaced my idler/ tensionor pulley but that did nothing. I've read that someone on here had the bearing go bad in their main crank pulley, would this be my problem to? How would I figure this out? I've been looking for crank pulleys and I can't seem to find a stock one and instead of buying one from ford im honking of going ahead and upgrading to the underdrive pulley. I was also thinking this would be a good to time to switch to an electric fan. Any suggestions?

It's possible that it is your crank pulley. There is a metal washer inside the hole there. Mine was loose inside there and rattling around. You can actually put a finger in the hole of the crank pulley (on bottom side of motor) and wiggle that washer around. Of course do that with the engine off please. Replaced it with an underdrive pulley and no more rattle. I did a write up on how to replace the stock pulleys with underdrive pulleys... search my threads for it.

But... you have an 02... it could be the timing chain rattle that those motors often get. Search around for some information on that and how to fix it. It is a common problem on that years 4.0's.

Water pump?
Take the belt off and spin it.
Start it for a few seconds with the belt off and listen. Long enough to hear it, not long enough to overheat it!

If you still hear it, suspect the timing chain tensioners.

i have a rattle as well.... almost more like a ticking. it comes and goes. let me know what you find as i will be checking my truck in the a.m. as well.

i have also had another issue since the day i bought the truck. its a sound of something like birds chirping under the hood when im driving and hit approx 2200-2500rpm. i have replaced the belt, tensioner pully, tensioner assembly, alt., and the a.c. comp. clutch assembly. i dont know what else it could be.

You might check out aspracing.com

It doesn't show they carry one for the ranger or a 4.0 but you might contact them and see if they know where to get them or ask them to make you one.

i've checked asp's website and a saw the 4.0L pulley but im not sure if that fits all of Fords 4.0 and I dont see where to buy it. I sent them an email asking about it ill let you guys know when i hear back from then. Also how hard was putting it on? And I saw a How-to for an elctric fan conversion but the pictures dont come up. Is there anyone who know how to wire everything up, how to mount it, and exactly everything i need?

put a gatorback belt on it. i chased the same noise around on my 01 for years and after replacing the belt (with a cheap dayco), tensioner, idler ect to no avail i finally broke down and got a gatorback belt for it and the noise is gone and has stayed gone for a couple years now.

it is also the same part number as the one carried by underdog. i'm sure you can find it from other vendors as well, just search the part number.

REMOVE YOUR DRIVE BELT AND SPIN AND WIGGLE ALL THE PULLEYS TO CHECK FOR NOISE AND ROUGHNESS,YOU CAN ALSO FIRE IT UP WITHOUT THE DRIVE BELT TO SEE IF IT'S QUIET
