looking to highten the exhaust (and install a snorkel).
HEY ALL!!
I am new to the forum.
I am currently parting out my 91 exploder, and now want to simply make a few mods to my '04 ranger and have a few questions.
I have done a search for snorkels, and think I am going to go with a Toyota one that will fit my ranger, my real question is with hightening the exhaust.
I can not see why people get a snorkel, and do nothing to the exhaust. I am not a mechanic, but am very inclined. I am not sure but:
DOES IT NOT MAKE TOTAL SENSE TO RAISE THE LEVEL OF YOUR EXHAUST IF YOU ARE GOING TO ENTER MODERATELY DEEP WATER ALOT> AS WELL AS GET A SNORKEL?
Now, to my question. I am not sure as to the best way of achieving this raise. I want to simply raise it to be level with the top of the truck bed.
What is my best bet? Should I stay with stock parts and simply weld on a curved, then straight pipe to achieve this? Am I going to mess with anything by raising the hieght of my exhaust?
Any tips would be great thanks in advance...

If you really want to raise the exhaust then put some stacks up the back of the cab.
I have a snorkel and didn't raise the exhaust. Yes it is bad to get water in the exhaust but as long as the truck is still running it will not get any water in it. IF you stall out in water then you have a problem. The one time I did stall out in water it started back up fairly easily.
As for a snorkel. In reality are you really going to need a full blown snorkel. I mean think about it. If you are going to put your intake at the level of your roof you are going to have water in more places than you need it. Your interior soaked, heating ducts filled, electronics in the cab destroyed, water in tranny, diffs, transfer case, and your entire engine will be under water.
Are you truely doing the kind of wheeling where you need the snorkel that high. If you do make sure you waterproof your cab and put you vent extensions up to the roof line as well.
Now I thought about all that and decided I didn't need a full snorkel and a cowl snorkel would work fine. See my pics here https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...3&page=7&pp=25
It has never failed me and I have gone through some deep stuff. The deepest ended up with me having 10+ inches of water in my cab. My air box was bone dry and the truck stayed running in about 38 inches of water.
If you are afraid of water being sucked in through the cowl it won't unless you put your hood under water. And if you are doing that then you need to water proof much more than your exhaust and intake.

I forgot to mention. You have an 04 I assume it looks nice. Do you really want to cut a hole in the fender. You can't patch a hole and if you don't plan to keep this truck forever there are not many people who will want a truck with a full blown snorkel because then they have an idea of what it has been through.

wow,
That has to be the best feedback to a post I have ever recieved.
I never knew the difference (I mean i knew there was a different way of doing the intake, but never reserched the cowl until now) and thanks to your post....I think I am now going to do this the right way.
Cowl it is. The exhaust is going to get raised , I just see it as a safety measure, I plan not to stall...but who knows. I have heard such horrible stories about that.
Thanks for the post bryanjints....take your feedback any time
As for the truck, I am posting a pic tonight.
Now to try to sort out why my truck can not tow 3000lbs any faster than 90kms/Hr and can hardly make it up a small grade paved highway hill.

Hey no problem. I thought about doing a full snorkel also. This was after I watched a guy hydrolock his truck in a small pond. I decided not to go wheeling again until I had a snorkel. then I was talked out of going with the full snorkel with the same reasoning I gave to you. The guy who talked me out of it ironically was the same guy who I watched hydrolock. Which makes it even more ironic that he is the one that designed the cowl snorkel. unfortunately he didn't have the cowl snorkel installed in his truck when he went through the pond. I am sure if you search you could find the video of the hydrolocking.
