Welcome to the forum
What Year Ranger?
Assume 4.0l engine from the forum you chose
Lost compression?
It wouldn't restart if you lost compression
Melted wires in engine bay is troubling, was it a fire, any smoke seen?

When you turn on the key, does the CEL(check engine light) come on?
It should, that means the computer is booting up
If it does come on, you should also hear the Fuel pump in the gas tank come on and run for 2 seconds, but only 2 seconds
Repeat key off and on as much as needed to make sure you hear the fuel pump, it isn't quiet, it makes a HUMMMMM you can hear in the cab for those 2 seconds

You are talking to Ron D and he is very knowledgable about Ford Rangers so I don't need to stick my nose in to something that I really don't know a lot about.
BUT, I would really like to know what caused the Plus Wires to melt !?!
How many wires melted ?
Did they melt back to the coil ?
Were the wires melted to something else, i.e. Exhaust Manifold, Coil Pack(s), Valve Covers... ?
