I mean yea I love my truck and I know they arnt for speed, however I just think ford needs to revamp the engine. I honestly think the Ranger is the best bang for the buck and its retarded to pay 30-40 grand for a Tachoma/Frontier. I think my truck has alot of get up and go, I just wanted to see if anyone thinks that 207HP seems underrated or needs upped to compete.

mine has a 4cyl and I think it has a pretty good amount of power......sure it isn't a 4.0, but lets see a 4.0 get 25+mpg. The 4cyl will get up and go pretty good without any problems. Besides, I'd get into trouble if I had a 4.0. lol I dont need speed anyways, cause I dont want to get a ticket, i've got pulled over for doing 20 over in my other truck, and luckily got a warning, and now I dont speed anymore, well for the most part anyways. Its way too easy even with my 4 cyl.

One thing I've noticed...

Aside from the new tacoma, has anyone tried to visualize 33s or larger in the wheel wells of some of the newly redesigned "compact" trucks, without needing to lift, be it suspension or body, in order for them to fit? The colorado, canyon, isuzu i-2xx, etc look like you might be lucky to fit 31s, even with an off-road package (z71) thrown in. I've been pondering the new frontier too. Back when I had my 93 I had thought about getting a frontier as I liked the recently old body design. The new one does look to have the same amount of clearance my ranger has, even when I was on 31s. I've yet to park next to one of the newer frontiers for comparison purposes though. I've seen older body design dakotas on 33s and 35s, but I'm not too sure about fitment of those tires with the new design.

Now mind you, this is trying to visualize 33x10.50s. The same tire size I can fit stock on my truck. Some of these new trucks don't even look like 31s would fit without some sort of lift. Hell, I was looking at dodge's site for pricing on a new dakota (what a freaking JOKE!) and the best axle ratio I could do was 3.92 I believe with the v8, and no manual option on it (Laramie model quad cab 4x4)! Pricing is already at 30240, and that's without adding bells and whistles to the interior and options.

The things that are appleaing to me on the new frontier and tacoma are electronic selectible lockers, and 6 speed manual trans. I don't even know if manual t-case is an option on them.

Out of all these trucks, I honestly have no need for a 4-dr model. Sure it would be nice because then I could have more people in the truck, but for the most part (99.9999999999%) my supercab is plenty of room.

My Ranger has more than enough power for a daily driver which I use it for and I occassionaly pull our boat and utility trailer with it. Although some of the other trucks you are comparing are newer in design, I find it hard to beat my Ranger for what I use it for and have been impressed with the durability that the 3 I have owned have had.

That's exactly why when mu 93 was totalled I went searching for another 4.0L ranger. I knew I wanted the Level II package because I had found an 03 with thew twin shifters and nutted myself when I saw the interior. I found that truck in 2004. The used dealership wanted 19 for it and I couldn't talk my mom into letting me get rid of my 2wd 93.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'd like a 150, but I have no real need for a full-size other than to have a v8. Future speaking I'll eventually drop the 302 into the ranger when I can afford a 2nd vehicle. For now, even with 33s and not regeared, my ranger still performs in a manner that is fine by me and has plenty of power.

All I ask for is something I can use as a ' base ' to build from. Ford gave me such. For what I paid for my truck new, nobody else could touch it ( my truck came stripper. no power anything! Steel wheels.. if it could have been deleted, I took it out ) .

My next truck will probably be a Colorado, Reg Cab I5, Extreme type. I don;t need an Ark, theres already a F350Dually in the drive.

It's kind of messed up about the hp ratings, but I have to tell you. These trucks have lots of power! The HP doesn't have to show it. It's the touqe that propels you, that's what matters.

That surprises me actually. I dunno how well a I5 engine preforms, I liked the 4.3 despite their problems. I still think the S10 Extreme is the best looking truck of any midsize truck.

Not sure I'd go to a different truck at all let alone a yota. Reason is my truck have one purpose. Running mud hauling 2-3 people cutting wood and getting the job done.
I love my ranger for the small wheel base and the width. Ever run a quad trail with one they fit the same places trust me.
As for horsepower the aftermarket has way more toys then I'll ever look at. Why they have enough already to do what they do and if not a gear change is cheap.
Besides seeing I have the 85 with over 200,000+ on the clock and well sometimes shoddy maint. who's gonna make me a believer that there is anything better. This of course is from a 600 expense for the truck almost 8 yrs ago. Remember it's even a 2.3. It has 31's 5.13 gears and manual.
Consider this I had a load of wood, my bud had his modified tractor and 22 ft trailer full of wood. It ran out of go juice and I pulled him and the trailer three miles thru the woods to the pavement then 2 miles across pavement and never once a slip or miss. There was some mean *** logs on that trailer to boot.

How much power do you need? Hell original jeeps had less!!! Climbed like goats as well.

This said only reason considering a fullsize 44 for the 91 is for some well mud events my bud runs in and 36's I want to install (d-28 wouldn'nt hold up to my style running with any amount of horses or the tire size).
I say let a taco run in the stuff my 85 has.

I like the look of the Colorado as I'm into the ' street truck ' scene. FOrd has made the ranger ' one faced ' and it requires a $hitload of work and cash to do what I want to do.

The stance of said colorado is close to what I want to begin with. Teh few exterrior mods I would do.. open a catalog and order them, simple catalog-applications. No need to fabricate all sorts of things.

Engine wise.. the I5 wouldn't be in there long to begin with. It would see MAYBE 12,000mi/1year, nothing more.

Imaging a L88 or a ZL1 in a new Colorado

I will be going to my uncles soon, so if I remember to check the guage and remember to post here, I will get back to you guys.
I went to my uncle's house yesterday (10-14-06). I did 242 miles on a tad over half a tank. Not sure how large my tank is on my truck, but I think 18 gallons.

I guess it was roughly 25 miles to a gallon. I may be wrong, this is a rough guess. It used alot less than i expected.

I used the cruise control all the way there at 70 MPH with the AC off. Was cool enogh without. Same thing on the way back. Windows were rolled up on the way there and down on the way back.

If you compare the weight to hp numbers on these trucks the ranger comes out ahead, the Dakota especially, it weighs allot more. I test drove a v6 and v8 Dakota the day I bought my Ranger, it felt a lot faster than either, the Dakota would tow more id guess but didnít feel the acceleration. The Toyota is probably faster but for the price of a Tacoma I can buy a new Ranger and supercharger and a lot of other goodies. With the Bama tuner the Ranger shifts a lot better, as far as an automatic goes. Torque curves and gearing make a lot of difference as well, I donít think a Frontier could outrun a Ranger but I could be wrong. My guess that in a year or two we will see the 3.5L that is in the new EDGE vehicle in the ranger, it makes 260hp or so.

Maybe Ford could reconfigure the Ranger to accept the slightly larger 4.2 liter V-6 put of the F series. The mod motors are very capable of making some power. I really do like the Ranger as it is, but the power, and torque could be a little higher yet. I would also like to see a T-56 6speed (sourced from the 2003-2004 SVT Cobra) stuffed in as an option. Imagine a factory option package similar to what the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon comes with... We could have a super stout transmission, rear axle, and suspension, combined with a 3-4" lift, and 33" all terrains, and an ARB air locker. I would pay a little more for that.

On the bright side, we have the best rearends.

ranger is dead. hate to brake it to u. ford sees no money in compact pickus anymore.

tho, given that every other company is squeezing more power out of the same size engine, and smaller, im sure ford could squeeze extra juice out of the 4.0

but remember, it doesnt matter what we want, it only matters what they want, and all they want is money, and since the ranger isnt a big money maker, it goes to the scrap yard.
