This rattle noise... chain tensioner?
I just purchased a 2006 Ford Ranger XLT 4*4 with 112k miles on it. After reviewing forums after purchase, I am now super sensitive about timing chain noise. I can hear valve moment up front, but in the rear, in the front wheel wells I hear a slight sound. It is constant and not very loud, cannot hear up front, but when listening in wheel well can hear same. I have added video's via you tube of the sound. I have a 6 month powertrain warranty which if it is the issue, I hope they'll honor.

i do hear a faint rattle there. It could be the rear timing chain. And to replace that one the motor has to come out

See if warranty coverage will replace the rear tensioner first, if rattle is still there then push to get new timing chain set, front and rear

So...
They said bring it in after the New Year. It is a second vehicle so I’m not driving it. My power train warranty covers internally lubricated parts, which I assume the tensioners will fall under. I ordered front and rear oem tensioners online, but now I’m wondering if they claim wear part and won’t change it, that I pay them to do the rear in case the cassette is broken, they can’t claim I did it when I changed it out. Thoughts? I’m thinking $250-300 for them to do it... I just got on the 18th, so I don’t think I should have an out of pocket, but we will see. If they don’t replace the tensioner and state it is normal chain sound, should I wait the 6 months to replace the tensioners when the warranty expires? |
I spoke with them, and due to being backed up won't be able to look at it until the 14th. For some reason I'm thinking I'm gonna get hosed on this deal. Any thoughts of paying them to do the rear tensioner as noted in my previous post that way if it is the cassette, then it will be pretty obvious right?

Just a late update, I did take the ranger in for inspection and the dealer said it sounded like every other 4.0L they get in there. I just got around to replacing the rear tensioner with an OEM unit. It sounds the same, no change. I am concerned that while screwing it in, I could screw it all the way in by hand. With no resistance, I'm thinking the cassette is broke.
