Welcome to the forum

2001 and up Rangers have 3 parts for the 4x4 system

Dash switch
4x4 module
Shift motor

Switch rarely fails, it just has 3 resistors inside, not much to it

4x4 control module was a problem from 2001 thru 2005, known failure point

Shift motors often failed from disuse, need to shift into 4low once a month, just sitting in the driveway is fine, don't have to drive in 4WD, just shift it so electric motor stays clean

The lights on the dash don't come on until shift motor has moved transfer case to correct position
The shift motor has a contact wheel that moves with the motor, the contacts have to be on correct position FIRST and then the 4x4 module will turn on the dash light for 4high or 4low, so there should always be a delay, if you select 4high from 2WD, while the motor turns transfer case shift rod
i.e. the lights are not a confirmation you have moved the switch, they are a confirmation that the shift motor has moved

There are a few fuses for this system
Fuse #13 in engine fuse box

In cab fuse box check

Hi Ron
Thanks for your respond
so I meant light on 4x4 switch not working (I dont know if there is any other 4x4 lights on dashboard, I apologize but just git the car so I am completely new to Ford Ranger and cars overall)
Can I check if old 4x4 switch works properly ? any test I can do ? maybe Auto Zone can help me with this ?
also how I can find out that 4x4 module or shift motor work properly or is bad ?
Thanks

There should be 4 wires connected to dash switch, the black wire is the ground for the back light bulb, the Light Blue with red stripe wire is the power for the bulb, it comes from the dimmer switch same as dash back lights do, they also use the same light blue/red wires
So when you turn light on and then adjust dimmer wheel the dash lights and the 4WD switch light should go up and down in brightness

Use an OHM meter on the old switch, pins 1 and 4 are the light bulb, should read 10 to 300 or so, if it doesn't read anything, no change, then bulb is burned out

Pins 2 and 3 are the 3 resistors for the module, shouldn't read 0 ohms, should read 3 DIFFERENT ohms when when switch is in its 3 different position

You test 4WD system by shifting it to 4high and then 4low

Flip down the drivers side visor, should be instruction there

And go here and down load owners manual for 2001 Ranger: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/

Good to have and will also have instructions for the different systems

Thanks Ron
It illuminated now :)
I did not even think about dimmer option in 4x4 switch :)
I do have manual and thanks for the link
Now I have to test if 4WD works
so if switch illuminates does it mean it work properly ?
Thanks

Back light in switch just means the light bulb in the switch works, nothing more

The two 4WD lights on dash, 4high and 4low, should come on when you turn on the key, thats just a "Bulb Test" nothing to do with 4WD system
When you use the switch to change to 4high or 4low then if those lights come on after a second or two it means the system is most likely working as it should
The switch is not connected to those dash lights, they are turned on and off by the 4x4 module, and it turns them on or off when shift motor has move to correct position for 4high or 4low or 2WD(both lights off)

Easier to look up stuff with the downloaded manuals, lol

Hi Ron
so my lights on dash don't come on when I turn the key at all. NO bulb test nothing.
so what do you think I should do next ?
When I follow the 4x4 procedure I can't hear anything while switching a switch to 4 high or 4 low
Thanks in advance for your advices

Did you check and TEST the fuses in post #2 above?

It reads like the 4x4 module is not powered on or is unhooked or broken

Then I would say locate the module, usually in passenger side kick panel, and check its connections

There are two wiring connectors on it
pin 1 on one connector will be an Orange wire, that wire should have 12volts with key on, thats from fuse #5 in cab fuse box
