rev limiter

why does my truck only let me rev it to 3200 ? extremely annoying. there is no way to change this is there?

TexasRanger Nov 7, 2009 06:01 AM

if you put it in drive you can rev it much higher :biggthump

DallyBoy09 Nov 7, 2009 06:05 AM

i was wondering the same, but only for reverse.....hard to rock out of a hole when you cant get the tires moving

01RangerEdge Nov 7, 2009 06:26 AM

Ford must know something about these engines that we don't. These engines prolly are too much to handle so they had to put a limit somewhere so normal humans can handle it.

EDIT: (sarcasm)

trail ranger Nov 7, 2009 09:19 AM

haha well yea if im floorin it or kickin up some mud it revs quite nice but i dont like how i cant rev it up in neutral

Redneckstone Nov 7, 2009 09:50 AM

its to keep you from doing that lol

04DSGMike Nov 8, 2009 01:27 PM

its a rev limiter to stop people from revving the **** out of them. can be taken off with any hand held tuner, same with the 93-95mph top speed limiter.

rangerboy101 Nov 8, 2009 01:30 PM

Get a tuner

TXRanger09 Nov 8, 2009 01:44 PM

i know it may sound wierd and i dont know what exactly happed but i got burried in the sand yesterday and tried to rock out and when the tires started spinning in reverse it bounced off the rev like 3200 i guess and stalled and its an automatic lol i didnt think it was posible to stall an automatic.

TexasRanger Nov 8, 2009 02:16 PM

automatic transmissions limit reverse to 3200 rpm?

damn, back i my standard transmission days i would rip backwards at over 5k

i know that if the truck rolled forward at all while in reverse the truck will automatically shut off.

This is why i have a manual trans :)

How would i do that? i have a sct tuner from bama chips.

I've been curious about this one. M truck doesn't have a rev limiter even though it's an auto. Everything on it is stock. But it rev's all the way up to 5k

Tys 4x4 FTW Jan 12, 2010 10:32 AM

maybe they didnt limit the OHV 4.0's. who knows

Does it go past it? Usually rev limiters are a little higher than the top of the RPM scale. I'm 99% sure you truck has one. They have been using limiters since the early years of EFI. Why? Because EFI systems will continue to supply fuel to the engine at mostly whatever RPM the engine will rev to before falling apart so there has to be an ignition cut or fuel cut to prevent over revving. Even stock carbed engines had a limiter, sort of. It was more like the carb would reach its maximum fuel flow capability.

mcneill_4x4 Jan 12, 2010 10:53 AM

my 98 ranger didnt have one but my 01 does. mine doesnt have it while in reverse just nuetral

bergs Jan 12, 2010 10:42 PM

Every single vehicle built within the last 25 years or so has some kind of engine speed limiter from the factory.....every last one of them. Put the trans into 1 and punch it till it pings the limiter. Unless someone went in with a tuner and defeated it, there's a limiter.

01RangerEdge Jan 12, 2010 10:54 PM

Is there a way to adjust the rev limiters?

Or are they permanently set based on the engine?

whippersnapper02 Jan 12, 2010 10:56 PM

You can change yours with a tuner. No point since there isn't any power up there and the risk of hurting your engine.

Johnbaum13 Jan 12, 2010 11:00 PM

With an SCT tuner, when loading a tune, choose adjust options, and there you have the park/drive RPM limit setting. But why would you want to rev the piss out of it in neutral? Thats not good for the motor.

01RangerEdge Jan 13, 2010 06:57 AM

I was just curious, I've been told before that removing the rev limiter will mess up your shift timing if you have an automatic.

But I guess that tuner lets you adjust certain rev limiters

99offroadrngr Jan 13, 2010 09:54 AM

i dont have one :439:

Nothing to do with shift timing and everything to do with exceeding the mechanical capabilites of the engine.
