whining noise in engine

whining noise in engine

hey guys i have a 98 and im getting a whining noise coming from the airbox area, somedays its louder and others its not, and i noticed that the volume of it changes when i turn on the air. any opinions? my dads truck has similar noise.

when your like doin 65 and holding it there? it sounds alot like your intake, im not sure about when you turn on your air though. when i turn on my AC it idles higher but thats a different story.

hey i know about this one, my truck did this too

its your iac valve (idle air control) you can clean it, i just got a new one instead though. theyre like $30

ok guys update on this help me out. i noticed today when the clutch on compressor is spinning there is no sound, when the clutch stops the sound comes.

so when the A/C is on and the compressor is turning, there is no sound? and when the A/C is off and its freewheeling it comes? then that would be the bearing thats in that pulley.

but why would a bearing on the ac compressor cause a soudn over by the air box?

isnt the compressor like right infront of the airbox? lmao. oh wait thats the accumulator.

yeah the compressor is on the right hand side of engine.

i had this problem a few weeks ago. check the rubber lines running around the intake manifold, specifically the L shaped ones running under the big coolant hoses. the one on tops rests on an air line and over time it wears out th rubber causing it to pinch and make whining noise.

My 04 started doing this same thing today on the way back from williamston, Best way i could describe it is a locust under my hood is what it sounded like, as soon as i turned on the AC noise disappears. I really hope its nothing expensive cause im broke right now.
