Running very bad...engine codes P0172 & P0175

After mudding hard at the Pittsburgh meet this past weekend, my truck runs like he**. It's showing the 172 and 175 codes which mean running rich. I've cleaned my: MAF, intake tube, air box, IAC, throttle body, and got a new air filter. Since the meet i've also run almost 3 entire bottles of Seafoam through the vacuum booster line and it's burnt out stuff and smoked every time, which I think means that it's burning out something in the engine. When idling it runs poorly and when giving it gas when attempting to accelerate it will sometimes stall or if it doesn't stall it accelerates poorly, will jerk and not accelerate through the rpm range correctly, it will be ok from about 1-2.5 rpms then go very slow from 2.5 til about 4, then at 4 will be like normal. At high rpms, about 5+ some pinging noise comes from the engine bay. After running for a few minutes, it smells bad from the outside, like a cat converter is bad (rotten eggs).
I've searched on RF for hours and haven't found any recommendations on this from anyone.
I've read posts from many on here, some had problems from the torque converter, to a simple vacuum like leak, to bad gas to bad fuel pump and such. I don't think it's simply bad gas for me, this happened suddenly when wheeling and has not gone away yet from anything I did.

o2 sensors?

what about spark plugs and wires?

rideac1 Sep 3, 2008 06:19 AM

Just put on new JBA wires a month ago, I did make sure they were connected properly yesterday and they seem to be.
My truck has 76k miles, and I changed the plugs around 50k.

I was actually thinking about the o2 sensors, but wouldn't they throw a different engine code? Or can they be connected somehow to the codes i'm getting? I was thinking that they're probably very dirty, especially after running the Seafoam through which produces mass amounts of smoke which probably deposits something on the o2 sensors. Is it feasible to take the o2 sensors off and clean em easily?

as far as i know the o2 sensors are what reports if the engine is running lean or rich.

does that code say which bank? or are those codes for each bank? I'll look them up

Looks like I would do this...

replace the fuel filter lately? or the MAF is just junk

codes like this suck, i spent several days hunting for a similar issue on a escort zx2, it was a vacuum leak on the back side of the engine

rideac1 Sep 3, 2008 06:56 AM

As the codes report, its both bank 1 and 2. After work this afternoon i'm going to double check for leaky or disconnected vacuum lines and try to clean the o2 sensors...is it possible to clean them?
I replaced the fuel filter about 15k miles or so ago.

Is it possible to drive without the MAF sensors connected to see if the MAF controls anything to be causing this?

zabeard Sep 3, 2008 07:04 AM

if you disconnect the MAF it will not run well at all.

i am not sure about cleaning the o2s I replaced mine at 100k miles and they really didnt look that bad, but my truck wasnt running bad either.

reason i doubt it is the o2s is both banks are reading rich, so something is wrong elsewhere, i mean what is the possibility of 2 o2 sensors going bad at the same time?

I'm thinking this may have something to do with and an leaky or open injector on bank 2, which is causing your rich condition.

How can I check for or fix this?

And bank 1 is just reading rich for no reason? its both banks. its got something to do with air intake or vacuum.

It could be my MAF, I used to go mudding more often and I know i've had water and mud specks in there for years. I do keep it clean though but i'm sure somehow the cleaner can harm it if you use too much and too often.

I called the junkyard, $35 - $40 for a MAF. I'm gonna mess around with mine tonight but probably end up buying one there in a few days if my truck doesn't get well soon.

So I got a MAF from the junkyard. Truck runs perfectly, if not better than before. I reset the ecu and no engine codes.

zabeard Sep 10, 2008 07:29 AM

awesome, glad you got it figured out

I wish I knew why the MAF died to begin with. I don't know if it was me going overkill cleaning it with MAF spray cleaner or if it was the years of mud and water going into the intake as well as the oiled K&N filter which I did clean and oil at least 2 times a year.

I also ran a tank of 93 octane, 2 bottles of Lucas injector cleaner, and a bottle of ATF through the gas tank. She's runnin better than stock now, especially with my recently new JBA wires and exhaust.

atf??

rideac1 Sep 10, 2008 07:56 AM

Yep. My boss at my previous engineering job used to design transmissions and bearings. I used to chat to him about truck things and such. The 2 products the he recommends that work as injector/fuel cleaner are ATF and Techron-Injector Cleaner. I just searched online and found this good link as well: http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread170799/pg1
