is it a sending unit or a fue gauge?

Ok so something is goin haywire in my 99 ranger. Fuel gauge seems to float a lil bit an now its saying 3/4 of a tank when The tank is full.

Is there a way of figuring out weather its a fuel gauge itself or a sending unit?

Would a diagnostics test tell me?

I just dont have the time or money to go playing "guess an check" any more than I have to.

It's more than likely that your brass float has a hole in it and isn't completely "floating" any more. < $10 part at the Ford dealer.

If you'd like to troubleshoot, it's the YE/WH wire to the cluster (and to the PCM). (read the Yellow w/ White stripe wire to ground) 22 ohms = Empty, 145 ohms = Full
