Should I change oil pump?
 

I’ve got the engine out of the truck because I’m installing all new timing components. I’ll have the oil pans off.

should I change the oil pump just because I’m stripped down to it?
I don’t know much about this engine. The 4.0. It’s a 2004.
I’ve heard it may not have the best oil flow.

Yes, but make sure you research a quality branded oil pump that isn't prone to failure.

should I get a high volume pump?

I installed a higher capacity oil pump on mine when I rebuilt the cam timing system at 250K miles. However, I also have a bypass micron filter system that uses about 15% of the oil that pumped by the oil pump. That was not a problem until I got somewhere over 200K miles on the engine. When I was towing or driving hard on an Interstate, I would get flickering oil pressure gauge when it dropped down to an idle. Apparently, the wear on the bearings was enough to let more oil flow and allowing the pressure to drop. The higher capacity oil pump resolved that.

Unless you have a bypass oil filter or very high mileage on the engine, you probably don't need a high-capacity oil pump. It might be a good idea to install a new stock oil pump though, depending on how many miles are on it.

I think I’ll just put a ford oem pump in it
