SOHC Cam timing question

When retiming my drivers side camshaft do i set cylinder 1 at 0 degree absolute TDC or 10 degrees BTDC? I have marks for both of them on the crank pulley. I tried setting the timing up on 0 degree tic but it ran like crap. It would hardly idle and when i put it into gear it would usually stall, but once it got up over about 2000 rpm it would seem to run fine. I just want to make sure i have the timing set right before pinning the problem on something else.

Cam timing would always be setup with crank at 0deg TDC, on any engine.
This is strictly about compression and firing order.

Spark timing is adjusted for TDC #1 compression stroke, for base spark timing BTDC

If you have a compression gauge test compression, 4.0l SOHC has 9.7:1 ratio so you should be above 170psi(all spark plugs removed to get faster crank speed)
Test at least 2 cylinders on both banks
