Starter wont stop cranking!

Here's the deal, my truck is an 06, 26k miles. Today i go start my truck, and i hear the telltale whining sound of the bendix gear in the starter not disengaging. Ok, i shut off the truck and pull the key out of the switch...

IT KEEPS CRANKING FOR A MINUTE....

I had to scramble to find a socket, and disconnected the battery to stop it.

I tapped on the starter with a hammer after I killed it. (Tried to unstick the solenoid)

After doing this, it started up and worked. A few hours later it did it again, but only lasted about 10 seconds and died on it's own.

I'm guessing the solenoid in the starter is arc-ing shut and wont stop powering the starter.

I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow. Is the starter a sealed unit, or would they just replace the solenoid?
I'm guessing the bendix gear is pretty effed up from the motor running with the starter..

a new starter at autozone or something will cost you like 80 with core charge, just do that.... theyre not that hard to replace.

I believe they're separate... BUT, I do have a spare 4.0L SOHC starter for sale in case it doesn't work. It's a pain to pull yourself especially without a suspension lift.

I'm still under warranty.
I just want to make sure the dealership doesnt hose me, as I dont know how these starters are.

Is there a separate solenoid on the firewall like older cars or is it all self contained?

Well make them fix it then! lol

What's stupid is some dealerships won't touch the truck powertrain/drivetrain wise if you have anything over sized over what it came with stock. Just giving you a heads up.

My FX4 came with 31'' BFG's stock. I've got 32's. I doubt they'll notice.

This dealer is pretty cool though. Old Black Cat has gotten an alternator and starter replaced under warranty there, and they were both VISIBLY full of mud...He actually saw the tech beating the mud out...

lmao.....i had this happen to me once, i actually got out of my truck when it wouldn't start (left it in gear) and the starter engaged.....my truck took off across the yard and took out the basketball post.

the engine never came on since the key was off but the starter solenoid was stuck shut...so the starter was running my truck in 1st gear for at least 50 yards

Another member on here had a transfer case problem. He too came with 31's stock and had 32's on his truck. They said the problem was because of the 32's and wouldn't touch it under warranty. Had to borrow Shane's 31's and go to a different dealership to get it worked on. That's why I said they don't tend to touch anything if it's over stock.

You know, i think i've got the same problem. It seems like the starter wont disengage for like 2-3 seconds after the engine cranks. Hmmmm. . . . i'm still under warranty, but i have mass mods done to my truck. I guess it's worth a try......????
