switch to syn. oil ?

i got 28,000 and i'm debating on switching to either mobile one or royal purple synthetic instead of conventional. I have a few questions.

1. I operate in ALOT of dust and stop N go traffic so i'm affraid 7,000 -10,000 miles between oil changes is a bad idea and maybe every 3,000 with conventional might be better .

2.Can i go back to conventional oil after i have used synthetic ?

3.royal purple or mobile 1 ?

4.whats the best oil filter ? motorcraft or k&n

5.should i change it after 3,000 for the first time cuz it said to clean the motor ?

6.anything else i should know about?

bryanjints 04-22-2007 09:30 PM

I have used Mobil 1.

1. I drive in much dust and after 7,000 miles my oil was very dirty. It is much cleaner after 3000 with conventional oil so I stick with conventional in my truck. The wife's car gets Mobil 1 Extended life and gets a change every 10,000.

2. You can go back and forth not a problem.

3. I have heard good things for both.

4. ??? Don't know but I do know that most will curse out a fram. I have never seen a noticable difference in any oil filter I have used.

5. Never heard of "cleaning" the motor with a 3,000 mile run. Try some motor flush. Cost like 5 bucks. Read the instructions on the back you dump it in right before an oil change it really gets the gunk out. I used it in my 88 B2 and it helped it to run better.

6. ??

i drive in a lot of dust too and i but mobile 1 synthetic blend. its supposed to be good for 7500 but i just go ahead and change it between 3-4k.

Big04Ranger 04-22-2007 09:54 PM

iv used mobil 1 5000 since the truck was new.. im 99% sure that im gonna change everything to royal purple very soon.

and i will always change my oil at 3k no matter what oil im using

I use valvoline and it works great, just regular oil and I change it every 3k miles.

1 - Your air filter has a lot to do with that, use paper (I recommend WIX). 7,000 should be fine, but I change at 5,000.

2 - Yes, but why would you?

3 - I use Mobil 1. I've heard that Royal Purple is great for racing, but shears quickly so it's probably not too hot for an extended drain situation.

4 - Motorcraft, Motorcraft, and Motorcraft!

5 - No need

6 - your engine will run smoother, longer, and you should see a slight improvement in fuel economy

greygooseranger 04-23-2007 05:53 AM

I have read that royal purple is a wax based oil, and wax based oils are known to cause residue build up over time. I would go mobil 1, or amsoil, that's what I have ran now for 70K with no problems.....

wix or napa filters (same thing), Mobil 1

wydopnthrtl 04-23-2007 10:06 AM

I do my own engine work. And using mobil 1 with pure-o-later "pure one" filters changed every 5-6k miles my engines are PERFECTLY clean when torn down. Not even the lifters are coked. (which is usually the first to get so)

I use a 5w-30 when the motors have less than 50k on them and 10w-30 on anything over that. Oh and when I'm going to be spraying nitrous I always use 10w-30 as well.

Mobil 1 is still somewhat cheap at $23 for 5 quarts at my local wal mart. (only in the 5 qt jugs at that price)
And I get the filters at advance auto.

Do you guys think 150k is too high a mileage to changeover to syn?

greygooseranger 04-23-2007 11:16 AM

if its not leaking and doesn't burn oil then go ahead....

I would change to it and then change the oil and filter agian in about 2k miles. Then start running it 5-10k in between. Fully sytnhetic oils suspend the particals. During that first change over I'd expect to see the filter get more than it's fair share of debris.

valvoline w/ motorcraft filter ( 21 dollars). change it every 3K.

You'll never have a problem.

No reason to spend extra money.

Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic with K&N filter. Change every 5,000 miles

vindex1963 05-01-2007 06:22 PM

My truck is still new but always use Mobil 1, change every 5,000.

My air filter is a POS (K&N), but my oil and oil filter is nice. Mobil 1 15,000 oil. and Mobil 1 filter.

Why do you think a K&N is a POS?

BigRed 05-02-2007 08:11 AM

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

and from another site:

My primary concern with this filter are the cardboard end caps- I would be suspicious that the cardboard would deteriorate over time and may come loose, especially considering that the cardboard is in the way (partially) of the oil flow. I would be particularly concerned about this in a racing environment where higher pressures are common.

greygooseranger 05-02-2007 08:19 AM

^^^ Yeah, pretty much use anything else but fram. For the price, motorcraft filters cant be beat. On the more $$$ end. Wix, mobil 1, and k&n are great filters...

BigRed 05-02-2007 08:40 AM

damn, I had no idea, I always got them because I figured they were a major company and they have the grip on them which makes them easy to change so I dont need a wrench to remove them. I think I need to change it soon anyways, but I just did my brother in law's Ram 1500 Sunday and I put a Fram on it, oops.

05RangerXLT 05-06-2007 08:22 PM

I use Motorcraft filters with Castrol GTX, change every 4000.
