differences in the 4.0's from 93 and up

I might be putting in a newer engine into my 1994 4.0L ranger. I think this one might be on it's way down. I think I here a slight rod knock. It has 179,000 I think the speedo shows 79,000, but it most likely is the 179,000.

So I was wondering if I got a newer engine what years I should look at getting. I want something with a lot less miles, so it lasts me and is worth doing this. So most likely it has to be a lot newer. Also will my current computer and wiring harness work with the newer engines as well? Any help appreciated.

Thanks Downey. That was a good read. It was more oriented for rebuilding though. That may be an option I might do, but for now I am just looking for an engine with lower miles, so I don't have to dig into it too much. Basically though in that article I seen that 99 and up are SOHC instead of OHV. so does this mean I will need an engine that is 93-98? Or would the SOHC engines work in these cars? Would my transmission just bolt up to any of these engines? I am more concerned with wiring and accessories bolting up and the engine mount locations and what not.

you will want an 90-94 motor that is obI. are you sure you have a 94 because 94 was the first year they put the 6 digit odometers in, my truck has 271,000 miles on the original motor. it has never been rebuilt but has had off the gaskets replaced. if you truck is running fine i would say don't touch it let it run it is. who knows you may get another 100k out of it

Yea it is a 94. The owners manual says 94 and the date it was manufactured was 10/03, so it would have been sold in 94.

I'm not positive if what I'm hearing is a rod knock. I will take a video of the sound and make a new thread.

What does obl. mean though.

No I don't need another fast vehicle. I just want something with decent gas mileage this will be reliable and I am just worried about this with so many miles.

I had a friend come over and he said it sounds like my piston is tapping something a tiny bit, but it isn't bad at all. Nothing is really missing. He said that my exhaust smelt a tiny rich, but I'm not sure when the last time this things spark plugs, wires, fuel filter was changed. So I'm going to do a tune up on it.

I will post that video tonight sometime.

OBI and OBII are the different diagnosis programs for motors in 96 all cars went to the OBII system

its actaully OBDI and OBDII. but downey is right, in order for the new motor to plug right into your wiring harness you will need a 90-94 OBDI motor. you can run a 95 or later model year OHV 4.0 but you would need to change over intakes and a few other things to make it work with your year setup.

Yea that's what I mean. I'm willing to get a new wiring harness and computer if I need to as long as it isn't a ridiculous price because most likely I won't find a 90-94 with low miles at all.

Intake is in intake manifold or tube? What other things would I need to make it work?

OBD=On-Board Diagnostics. (Just for reference)
The last 4.0 OHV used was 2000. They went to the SOHC in 2001.

Read this. There is also a difference in the year engines you are looking for. Hope it helps.
