Timing 03 sohc 4.0l Ford ranger with out special tools.
Hi I was wondering if it's worth it and how easy is it to set the timing on my sohc 4.0 03 ranger. Its expensive to purchase the special tool and im tired of mechanics charging me $150 just to do it. I seen a video on youtube where a guy sets his timing by using some basic tools is it possible and is it easy any help please?

Yes, you need the timing tool set
Check with local tool rental companies
And some independent shops may have them for rental, after all they just sit for months or even years until they are needed, might as well rent it and make a few bucks.
Also check ebay and local craigslist, many people buy them new and used, to do their 4.0l SOHC and then resell them, you can do the same.
There are 2 kits, 4.0l SOHC kit(OTC 6488) and a larger kit that does 4.0l SOHC and several other Ford engines

So much more of an insurance policy to have that timing tool.
It has provisions to lock everything down so it doesn't move while you're placing the timing chain cassettes on and the torque to specs.
I've seen some people get away with an ellen wrench in the slot with a socket to hold it horizontal on the cam, but you'd have to be VERY mindful of any component moving. Can be very much bad for an interference engine.
If it did jump timing, rebuild or replace might be your only option.
In many cases, removing the engine is a necessity anyway as the rear (passenger) timing chain is next to impossible to service in that little bay.
I pulled the trigger on buying a JY special 4.0 from a newer truck and planned on tearing the old one down to perhaps rebuild since I had to pull it regardless. "Why not just swap it?"
My landlord didn't like that idea as that engine was taking up his precious 6sq ft (on engine stand) of real estate, so I sold it to a mechanic for a core.
The replacement runs soooooo good, and no headaches about finding a timing tool.
As for the tool, they have them on Amazon with cheap models as low as 100-150, and better ones 200-300, but the whole engine set me back 500, so the cost/risk savings wasn't there for me to do it myself.
Best of luck!

I got mine off eBay for 500+250 shipping out of a 2008 4wd.
The wrecking yard posted video of the running truck (before dismantling, of course) and the odometer.
Meow, that engine is in my 2003 XLT 2wd.
They had a 90-day warranty, but this thing feels sooooo strong, it may go waaaay passed that
