Transmission issues

I was on recently about overdrive light flashing and I haven’t figured it out yet. I’ve replaced the brake pedal switch which was one of the codes it threw the other code was something about the TCC and torque converter. I don’t have code now and it doesn’t show any unless light is flashing. My overdrive doesn’t work either. I have looked for a overdrive switch but nothing comes up. I need some help please

Assuming a 1995 and up Ranger
Specific year and engine would be helpful

Does transmission shift in to Reverse instantly or is there a delay?
That's a sign of low pressure in transmission

So OD on/off switch doesn't work?
Its not an on/off switch, its a momentary switch that sends 12v to computer when its pressed, when computer gets that momentary 12volt signal it turn OD off IF it was on, or turn it on IF it was off
When key is turned on OD is set to on automatically, so it resets to on each time key is turned on

Need exact codes of course
These are just a few of the TCC codes, there are more
P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction
P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off
P0742 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On
P0743 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical
P0744 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Intermittent

Each means something slightly different than the others or there would be no point in having multiple codes, lol

Year and engine size would be helpful, in that later years use OD for 2nd gear as well as OD 5th gear

Your profile notes\hints a 1998 Ranger + V6~4.0L~OHV Engine + 5r55e Tranny + 4WD.
You really need an OBD2 Scanner that reads both StandardSAE & ProprietaryFord Data+TroubleCodes;
don't count on the local parts store scanner to be able to read TroubleCodes for the Tranny.
The "OD Switch" is the momentary button on the end of the PRND21 ShiftStem that toggles OverDrive On\Off;
the connectd 2wire cable inside the ShiftStem+SteeringColumn is notorious for chaffing\shorting.
Sounds like you've also got other Tranny issues; really need an OBD2 Scanner to get those TroubleCodes as a starting point.

Transmission issues

The code is p1780 transmission control switch circuit is out of test range. It doesn’t hesitate going into reverse. And it only acts up when the light flashes. When it flashes it will shift hard going from first to second and when I slow down it will shift hard from second to first. I can pull over shut it off and start it back and it resets for a while but once it starts doing it it will continue to but sometimes it won’t do it for a whole day. When I try to find transmission control switch on any website it says no results

P1780 indicates an error with the OD Toggle Switch; again these are notorious for
the connected 2WireCable chaffing+shorting inside the ShiftStem+SteeringColumn;
consider replacing the ShiftStem+ODButton+2WireCable assembly; these are available new & relatively easy to replace.
If longer than 33kMiles\5years since the last Tranny ATF+Filter service, consider doing that also.

I believe it will; think the same ShiftStem+ODButton+2WireCable was used for like 15 years in many Ford models.
RonD can you confirm?

I show this Ford part number for the lever, with button and wire only: F57Z-7210-C
Say its for 1995 to 2002 Ranger

Whole assembly Ford part number is F8YZ-7210-AA
Does say 1998 to 2003 Rangers

The full assembly from Dorman 905-112 says it fits 1999 and up Rangers

Ok so I changed the switch out for overdrive and now I can turn overdrive off and on thought that solved it but after about 20 miles it did again. I’m going to take it out today with my scan tool and find out if it’s still the same code or different code

One item fixed at least.
Sounds like you've got other Tranny issues & TroubleCodes.
How long since last Tranny ATF+Filter change, Band adjust, ValveBodyBolts retorqed?
Could have ValveBodyGasket blown out, ValveBodySolenoids worn out.

I just changed the fluid and filter and I checked the bolts and they were all loose and I torqued them to spec. I’m actually out driving right now and I plugged my scan tool in and it said p1000,p1705,p1501. Tr sensor out of test range and vehicle speed sensor out of self test range. Any ideas to fix would be appreciated

Assuming this is the original factory 1998 Tranny, 24yo+ with 200k+ miles?
It's debatable if anything less than a full rebuild will do you good.
Spending money+time on replacing ValveBody & related parts is a less expensive option,
but if that gets you significantly more miles on this tranny is questionable.
