truck dies in drive and reverse

Gotta keep it on the gas. Truck is an automatic, gotta put it in nuetral at a stoplight then when in drive or reverse it sounds and feels like a manual transmission when you dont push the clutch in coming to a stop or like youre taking off in too high of a gear. any idea? REALLY dont want to pay $85 for a diagnostic test if I dont have to...

any lights on the dash?

mine did similar, but had a flash overdrive light, turns out the intermediate speed shaft sensor on the tranny wasn't reading and it was keeping it in 2nd at lights

Oh boy, not another problem with this thing! lol

Like above, any dash lights?

sullys_ranger Jan 1, 2011 06:22 PM

Check engine was on but I cleaned my battery terminals and its not on yet.

evilclown312 Jan 1, 2011 06:25 PM

Do you know what code it was throwing?

sullys_ranger Jan 1, 2011 06:29 PM

sullys_ranger Jan 2, 2011 01:40 PM

Nobody else has any idea?

j99ranger4x4 Jan 2, 2011 02:42 PM

try cleaning or replacing the idle air control valve it has been known to stick and when a load is put on the engine at idle like when putting it in gear the engine will shut off, some times it will some times it wont kick a check engine light. good luck

I'm guessing the torque converter. Had a ranger in the shop that did this exact same thing.

seed60 Jan 3, 2011 09:12 AM

Mine was doing this. I changed spark plugs/wires, fuel filter, cleaned maf/tb/iac, and it went away. Not sure what fixed it. I never had a check engine light though.

sullys_ranger Jan 3, 2011 10:06 AM

I thought plugs and wires a little bit too but it would do it in nuetral and park also Id imagine.

Toreador4x4 Jan 3, 2011 11:02 AM

If it idles fine in park and neutral, put it up on jack stands and click it into drive, if it stays running with your foot off the brake and the tires off the ground, step on the brake and see if it stalls. If it does the torque converter is staying locked. either from a faulty converter or a faulty converter control solenoid or circuit

Ill give that a try, thanx Justin
