True difference between the torque tune and the performance tune
 

Just wondering what your experiences are? What is the difference in HP, TQ, and drivability between for instance a 93 octane performance and torque tune with a Bama SCT tuner? I have been talking to Bob Jusnes to get a handle on what I want when I order my tuner this month, but I also wanted to ask you guys.

I guess it depends what you want to do with your truck. I personally prefer the "torque" tune. I tow a fair amount, and the torque tune give me more low end grunt, and a decent top end.

The performance tune definetly gave me more top end performance. It also felt a little quicker off the line (according to the butt dyno), but lacked the grunt I need whn pulling a trailer. It also seemed to be a little harder on gas. Whether that was because of my foot or the tune, I'm not exactly sure.

hell then there is the "racing tune" or whatever it is and I dont even know how that is different, however when I get one Ill be sure to leave it in that.

I had a bama tune for about a year. I ran the a 93 torque all the time. I liked it more than the 93 hp tune. I also 4 wheel and wanted the most low end I could get. I don't use the high end very much. Get a 93 torque and 93 hp and switch between them until you decide what you like. You should get a couple of tunes with the programmer.

Bob recomended the 87 perf, 93 perf, and 93 torque for a start.

I was going to go with 87 perf, 89 perf, and 93 perf. Still haven't decided.

get the set that Bob recommended....gives you more of an option....

I have an Apten Chip (no longer selling Ranger Chips) in my truck, They use a 3 way toggle switch to change the programming. I have 93 perf. 87 torq. and Stock as my 3. this way I can always go back to Stock(bypass) when needed (if I ever need to bring the truck in for service. What I had noticed with Torque setting was the shift points, they were much higher, which was really nice when I was pulling the boat, But I have found that it shifts way to much for me, So I use my Perf. setting for everything now. It holds the gears longer.

I got the three tunes recommended by Doug at BamaChips - the 87 performance, 93 torque and 93 performance. The 87 performance tune is a nice improvement over the factory tune, but the 93 performance is so much better that I run it all the time. Gas here is only about $0.14 per gallon more for 93 than 87, so it ends up costing close to $2 a tank more. I have not tested mine on a dyno, but I can describe a couple of differences.
Using the 87 tune, it is much faster off the line than the stock tune and will spin the tires for about 3-5 feet. Using the 93 performance tune, I can smoke them down from a dead stop, or get up to about 5 mph and punch it, and it still will break them loose for about 10-15 feet.
I have a stock 2001 Ranger Edge 4.0 SOHC XLT extended cab short bed with the 5 spd automatic OD transmission, 3.55 locking rear end, and factory aluminum rims with Michelin Select LT tires. I bought some Gabriel Pro Ryder shocks all around for a stiffer ride when I finally wore out the original Bilsteins at 50K. I also replaced the air filter with a K&N lifetime low restriction model which fits the factory box.
I am getting right at 21 mpg cruising on the interstate driving about 85 (I don't usually run the AC that often) and 16-17 mpg towing my boat at 70 mph. This weekend I will test the 93 torque tune and see what difference it makes in mileage while towing. I have not tried the mileage test for the torque tune since I got the Xcalibrator 2 last month, but I will post the results after I run off for a fishing trip this weekend.
I noticed you had an '04 4X4 which may be a bit different than my 2WD, but the Edge still shares the same style of suspension as the 4X4.
I am going for the underdrive crank pulley and electric fan next, and should have them installed sometime this month.

I guess I might get the recomended tunes, but I won't tow with my truck so I am still on the fence about the need for the torque tune.

Getting the midgrade is really pointless. If gas is so high that you need to lower the octane, then you will go to 87. You really aren't ever going to be at a place where paying for midgrade will be all that much better then super when you concider the added performance.

I would rather have more of a varitey.....87 performance, 93 Torque, and 93 Performance....Which reminds me i need to order mine soon.

From what I've been told, there is not much difference that can be programmed between the 87 octane and 89 octane. I would opt for 87 perf and the two 93 tunes.

I'm ordering my on Friday (the 19th). I can't wait.

I cant tell exactly what is different between the 2 tunes, but i can tell you that there is a significant difference that you will be able to feel. As you can see from reading this thread, different people prefer using different tunes, which is why I always like to send both out, so you can change back and forth between them.

I had 87, 89 & 91 perf. tunes & now 87 perf., 89 & 91 Torq. tunes. I really like the 91 torq. tune over the 91 perf. tune. Seems to jump off the line better with better bottom end torque. 18MPG with a lot of in town driving, usually its almost all highway miles.
