Tuner Talk

The time has come that i'm going to be looking into a tuner. I figure that i'm driving a bit more farther for my new job. so i should look into getting some better MPG's in the truck.
From what i understand, most tuner's won't come with the tunes written in them, i'll have to get those separate.
That being said. i've got some questions.
Whats your tuner, Whats your tunes, Who did them and how happy are you with it

I've got in narrowed down to a few tuners, SCT and XCAL come to mind. I was also looking at getting an ultragauge for added information.
I figured i'd get an Economy tune, and a towing tune. but thats all i know.

01RangerEdge Sep 7, 2012 05:10 PM

I don't have a tuner(yet) so I look forward to more info but I will say that the UltraGuage is well worth the money, I love mine

StxDangerRanger Sep 7, 2012 05:40 PM

I saw Morris's at SL. I've wanted one since then

SteelDirigible Sep 7, 2012 06:05 PM

I'll probably sell my UG soon. Only thing is the ball mount socket is kinda broken, but i thought I might see if they'd send me a new one. It's awesome and all but I've got my tablet project that hopefully will replace it. could always end up using both though.

What tuner does he make tunes for?

logan03CO Nov 20, 2012 05:48 AM

If I were you - I would purchase the SCT X3 setup (generally regarded as the best available tuner for our trucks)

As far as getting a custom tune written for it - I would recommend one of these guys:

Don @ LaSota Racing (SCT X3)

or

Fred @ Rogue Performance (Rogue Performance Custom Tuning)

I have used them both over the years...and they are both good guys. I just used Don a few months ago and he has awesome customer service!

Sct.....and as far as it being a x2 or x3 i dont think it matters.....x3 holds 3 tunes and does a few things like diagnosis and live monitoring and x2 holds 2 tunes and doesnt do as much

All I had was a Diablosport and used it with the pre-programmed tunes. That probably doesn't help you though... lol.

I'm currently running a LaSota 91 octane performance tune. I have an XCal2.

I'm pleased with it. I kinda want to get an economy tune written. Each tune is about 50 bucks

^^THIS! I second Don at LaSota. He not only got my X3 ready to go with some custom tunes, but he has helped me a lot on how to use it and change things to setting that I want.

I have a superchips cortex, im happy with it, comes with 3 tunes, performance, towing and mileage as well as stock with options (lets you adjust shift points tire size etc.) The most noticble tune is definitely the towing one. I went with the superchips cortex over the xcal just cuz they offered a powertrain warranty for whatever that's worth. I don't konw if you could get superchips to pay out if something went wrong but it gave me some piece of mind. The cortex also retreives and clears dtcs as well

01RangerEdge Nov 20, 2012 06:49 PM

For the price you paid, is everyone happy with the results from the tunes?

jeffw920 Nov 20, 2012 06:53 PM

Definitely happy with mine, however if i did it again i would get a flashpack instead of a cortex, flashpack is superchips lower level one, it comes with the same tunes but no warranty and no data logging. (0-60, quarter mile times etc). flashpack is 100 bucks cheaper i think

atrocity Nov 20, 2012 07:55 PM

if you're gonna shell out the money for a tuner/tune i'd make sure they're custom (lasota, rogue, etc.) not canned (preloaded), you'll see a lot more of a difference

I'm already averaging around 20 MPG, but it will probably be more worthwhile after I have my lift installed

I remember that video, I might just have to get one for the spring.

yamarider88 Nov 22, 2012 06:04 PM

im gettin a xcal 3 from fred but i am jus curious bout a few things...im not rly worried bout mileage but what kind of hp gains is expected out the 93 performance and how much torque is gained from the 93 torque setting and is the xcal 3 dash mounted??

logan03CO Nov 22, 2012 06:17 PM

No it's not a dash mounted product.

You only connect it to download the tune (or to read & reset any DTC codes) - then it goes back in the box.

yamarider88 Nov 22, 2012 06:51 PM

alright thanks...is there another product that gets mounted on the dash so i can monitor everything

In addition to the SCT tuner, you could get an UltraGauge (UltraGauge Automotive Information Center and OBDII Scan Tool) to have "real time" monitoring of certain parameters.

Morris has one and i've seen it.
They're slick as hell. I would get one in a heart beat.
