Type of oil filter for change (full synthetic)

I'm nearing the time that I have to change my oil in my new truck. I have always been the one to do my oil in my last truck (95 Ranger 4.0L V6 running conventional oil) and this will be the first time with this truck (02 Ranger 4.0L SOHC) and one of the things that I had asked the previous owner before I bought it was what type of oil do you run and how often do you change it. He saod he always changed the oil with Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W-30, but I looked on the top of the oil cap under the hood and it says 5W-30, so I'm wondering if I should go back to the full synthetic 5W-30 or stick with what he said with 10W-30 (if he even said the weight right in the first place).

The truck has 69xxxK miles on it and the last oil change was done at 65k, so I planned on doing it in the next week or so because in September I will be taking it on a roadtrip after my honeymoon which I estimate will put approx 1000 miles on it. In my old truck I only ever ran FRAM PH8A oil filters and Castrol High Mileage 10W-30, but then again that truck had 187k miles on it before it got totalled. What do you guys think about Mobil1 Full Synthetic 10W-30 and changing it every 5k miles.

I wanted to know what you guys reccommend as an oil filter because I went to Walmart because the truck has a Motorcraft 1Z (something) on it now and when I typed it into their little computerized box it's telling me some FS-820 or something which looks like a smaller filter (but the box says same performance, new size...) What oil filter do you run on your truck (same engine) and do you use a full size one or the smaller ones I am starting to see.

Thanks for the help

(I'm looking forward to not having to jack up my truck to do an oil change anymore either)

I've been on Bob is the oil guy forums for a bit and the guys are running mobil 1 or amsoil full synthetic for up to a year with no problems! Any high quality oil filter besides fram (cheaply made) is fine.

For an oil filter, I use Napa Gold's.

Cool, how about the newer & smaller Motorcraft filter that replaced that 1Z one or would you stick with the larger one? (what part # would you reccommend)

I know I have the 3.0 but I use Motorcraft Full Synthetic and a Motorcraft Oil Filter. I change it every 3-4k.

ok, well I'm fine with Motorcraft, but which part # filter do you prefer. There looks to be two that will work with my engine... is this right?

I usually run a Motorcraft filter but this last time around Vatozone had a big discount on the Mobil 1 oil filter when buying 5 quarts of the oil so I got it. The Mobil 1 filters are expensive at regular price.

Motorcraft 820s filter. You can use 5w-30 it will not make any difference what it had before. I also use Motorcraft synthetic blend. How far do you generally drive your truck to work?

Yep, sorry thats the one thats on my truck now, that model #, but now there is a FL-820S (this time I got the correct part #) that is sold and is what Motorcraft's site lookup says to use...

I ran 10w-30 mobil 1 w/pure-o-later filters. I'd readily use a motorcraft as well.

I have a 3.0 but I just did my first oil change on my truck. I ran Castrol Syntec (Full Synthetic) and a K&N filter. Autozone had a deal on em so I couldn't pass it up. The K&N filter is nice cause you can use a 1" wrench to remove it so its much easier with the PITA location on the 3.0.

FL-1A vs. FL-820S? - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

Weird article, but hey it says they are different threads.... what the heck, I guess I will put on whatever filter it has on it now. Which when I went to look at it is a FL-1A, yet the books and Motorcraft site say its the FL-820S filter which is a bit smaller.

Do you think that link holds any truth and that it in fact is a different thread type?

I've got a 3.0L, but I run Mobile 1 synthetic oil and Purolator PureOne filters since I got my truck new.

My 96 Ex plow truck uses the 1A, and my 820s would not fit it. I went to change the oil assuming it was an 820S, well I was wrong. i did not try to force it, but my experience they are different threads.

Weird thing was that some Exs of that year did use the 820s, guess they had some of the other mounts laying around that day...

Why am I always like the only one who uses the K&N filter and Royal Purple?

I used to run the k&n oil filter then I decided to go with motorcraft since it's cheaper. I really see no difference

I literally only run 'em because of that nut on the bottom! Can't find the royal purple filters locally or even online...if I could, I'd be running that with a nut welded to the bottom. lol.

Well I run the same filter but not royal purple. I almost bought some but didn't feel like spending that much. I might try it next time around.
