Floating gas gauge on 2000 Ranger

Is there anyway to change a floating gas gauge to a regular gas gauge. It gets on my nerves when my needle keeps moving up and down and not being accurate. Its a 00 ranger.

Its called sloshing.

The tank is shaped like a really big hotdog it will do it no matter what gauge you use.

Maybe you can build baffles inside.

IMHO, get used to it. Every vehicle on the planet does this when you stop ESP trucks.

My 06 FX4 does that just sitting in the driveway, which is pretty level. It will move go up or done an eighth of a tank. My 98 ZX2 did it as well, along with my friends 01 Cougar. I think its a Ford thing, cuz my 89 Grand Am didn't do it.

Hum.. I'm just not sure about a 2000 ranger. But I know that most modern cars have a processor in the guage cluster to buffer these types of readings.

They do the same thing with your speedometer, tachometer, oil, and temp guages. They are all buffered by a software engineer and marketting weenies who think the end consumer will be confused by guages that move in real time. Given my experiences with the average car operator... they are probably correct.

If it really bothers you.. I'd say it's one of two things. Either a loose / grounding wire or a bad guage cluster.

Mine doesn't slosh but it is only accurate on level ground. If I am on a hill for more thant 15 seconds it starts to move. It puzzled me at first because when I parked in my sloped drive way and pulled into the street I had 3/4 tank but the next time I checked 10 min later I only had 1/4 tank.

You probably have a perforated float.

I just had to replace one in one of my 93's.

It's made of brass and only cost $8 at Ford.

The guage cluster has an anti-slosh circuit built in. If your gauge moves when you stop, almost certainly the float isn't floating because it is partially full of gas.

mine does it too. I jus did the get over it mod. Sure it's aggrevating but why does it really matter, jus find gas as soon as your check gauge light comes on.
